The Best Adult Coloring Supplies. November 29, - Posted by Miriam to Guides , Arts and Crafts , Gel Pens , Brush Pens , Markers and Felt Tip Pens , Colored Pencils. Textured paper vs smooth paper. Whether coloring on a book or printed looseleaf sheets, consider a paper's weight and texture.

Thick heavy sheets can handle ink and sometimes watercolor paint, while thin paper is more delicate and suited for tools like colored pencils. The texture of the paper also affects how a tool performs. Generally, smooth paper is better for most coloring tools, but there are some like thick markers and watercolors that work beautifully on textured paper.

All of my charts as of 2 weeks ago took up my entire drawing desk! Of course, I forgot to add 2 charts in this photo as I was using them, AND I have since charted my two largest Faber-Castell pencil sets - color charting is a never ending story:.

With all of my charts spread out in front of me, I flip through them, slowly looking over colors and textures to decide which coloring tool I'd like to create with. As I do this, I'm visualizing how each collection of colors might play out together on my coloring page.

N ow that I'm a consistent creator of color charts, I can say with confidence that every brand has its own version of every color imaginable - not all ROYGBIVs are created equal, y'all, and sometime you've got to mix and match between makers to get your best collection of colors.

Every single color chart I make is uniquely its own animal. I chart when my brain can't focus on more complicated tasks, so I go with the flow of my chaotic mind when I create a color chart; perhaps this buzzing brain shows in the final charts, but that only makes me happy - my charts show I successfully used art to get through a tough head space yet again:.

After I have chosen my coloring tools, the next stage in my process is to do nothing but stare back and forth from my color chart s of choice and my coloring page I am actually doing another level of deep visualizing, pulling colors from the chart in my mind, coloring them into a space on the illustration, sometimes even going so far as to mix them or layer them in my imagination.

Before beginning to put crayon, marker, or pencil to paper, I have had many completed colorings of a single coloring page pass by my mind's eye, loads of color trial and error in my brain, before I ever make a single mark.

This mental coloring exercise was absolutely not possible for me before I had developed my color charting habit. Yes, a box, bin, or display case full of art supplies can show you a gorgeous array of colors, but let's be honest, no colorful plastic pen case, no brightly lacquered pencil covering, no color-coordinated pen cap EVER represents its color well, and how could it?

Plastic and varnish are highly reflective, so light dances off the colors we see in unexpected ways, thereby making us think we are choosing an entirely different color!

My coloring pages that I have been less than thrilled with have always been colored in community. C oloring with friends and family is about the conversation and the creative connection I get to share with those closest to me, both things that thoroughly engage my brain. There is no room in my head for deep visualization about color and technique when I am enjoying my creative community, so in these types of coloring environments, I opt out of my color chart visualization technique and instead simply color with the first thing that my hand picks up an exercise in spontaneity that I also enjoy.

That being said, I always bring my color charts to the party when I color in community! Coloring in a group usually means physical space is going to be tight - no single table is ever large enough for a collection of coloring enthusiasts and all their supplies. Using color charts helps free up space as sheets of paper replace bins and bins of coloring tools on the table; everyone now has more elbow room, and folks can spread out and get creative comfortably.

Color charts in group coloring also help younger coloring enthusiasts with sharing. Children can investigate their supplies and color choices much easier with color charts it is difficult to "hog" a large color chart , and seeing the huge long list of single colors somehow helps them to understand that there is only one black, one red, one white in every box of pencils or crayons, so logically there will have to be some turn taking if, for example, everyone is coloring a Halloween themed illustration.

If you are charting a watercolor or water soluble coloring tool, I cannot stress enough to use watercolor paper!!

Here I charted my set of Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils on Canson XL lb cold press watercolor paper. It is inexpensive, found easily on Amazon or at Wal-Mart, and makes for great practice paper!

Be sure to make your swatches of color big enough for your eyes to see all or most of your colors in one glance. In the case of color charts, size really does matter! CHECK OUT COLORIT.

The sellers emailed before the product arrived just to say that if I had any problems they would fix it right away, which I really appreciated. I have used them multiple times and really enjoy them! I love the way these markers perform that I might purchase a bigger set! I currently own 3 sets of Tomboy markers—the bright colors, secondary colors, and the primary colors.

I love them all! The tips are more firm than Tombow brush pens, more like a Pentel Sign Brush Pen. You get 16 markers, but 32 colors, since the fine tipped end is a different color than the brush tip.

Though honestly, it might be more like 28 colors, because I find some of them to be very similar to each other. And they come in a cute tin! Shetrone —. They also work well dipped in water for lighter washes.

They work well with the Arteza Expert colored pencils and Arteza Watercolor pencils. Love those too and use them with my Polychromos and Albrecht Durer pencils. But that can also be a plus, especially in mixed media work.

They are true to color and the ink flows well and does not bleed. The package states. The colors are beautiful and really pop. They dry incredibly fast for minimal smudging. The trick with smooth application is a light hand. For this reason I think the pens probably work best for adults. I think children may have too little fine motor control, and a heavy hand, leading to gapping in the coverage or bleeding ink.

I would buy these again, especially if I could get some new colors. This colorless pencil takes care of those annoying white spots you get when using coloring pencils while making the color more vibrant. I have also used this with my cheaper Crayola pencils and it works almost as well.

I have uploaded pictures of before and after with Prismacolor Scholar pencils. This lil beauty is even better at blending my precious prismacolor pencils.

I just need more than one. I recommend this over the the pencil type blender, as this marker blends MUCH BETTER than the pencil type. Plus two ends to choose from, the wide tip and the thin tip.

The finished product is much smoother and very vibrant! This is pretty much odorless, I use a small amount on a q-tip and it goes a long way. Before I discovered this, I used a colorless blending pencil to achieve the effect I like, Overall, I get better results with the Gamsol than I did with the blending pencil.

Use sparingly, it will soak through quality sketchpad paper if not careful. They can be used with most soft pencils graphite, color, pastel, charcoal, etc. The stumps can be brought back to a point using an Xacto or scalpel blade. A bit of sandpaper can also be used to clean them, although a blade may be required to restore a fine tip to the stump.

They can also be used with mineral solvents natural turpenoid, gamsol, etc. or mineral spirits i. baby oil to blend both oil and wax based color pencils. I wanted one that worked like the old school classroom sharpener.

Well I got what I wished for. The sharpening apparatus is quality, and sharpens every pencil wonderfully. Overall I am very happy with this purchase especially for the price!

and am happy to have sharp pencils again. This Bostitch Electronic Sharpener was a great choice. When we unboxed it , it was simple to connect the cord and plug in. It was ready to use immediately. It also has a function that makes a sound when the pencil is sharpened , which takes the mystery out of how long you need to push it for.

It has a very large reservoir to hold the shavings. It looks sleek and compact. I highly recommend both the product and the seller. We are two and a half months in and it is still sharpening like the day I took it out of the box!

I sharpen about 25 pencils a day and have had zero problems. Even the cheapest pencils come to an even and sharp point. I tell all my colleagues that this will end their pencil sharpening woes! Small so can just put it in my pocket. No batteries required- just stick the pencil in the hole and turn.

Caution- Shavings come out and fall on the floor where your wife will see them and have a hissy fit!

I truly love the precision you can get with this eraser. It really comes in handy when doing highlights in hair or any tight spot where you have limited space to work in. The eraser itself is really good quality and has a nice firm feel to it.

Just be sure not to have too much eraser sticking out of the metal support tube or it could bend as you try to use it. This is to be expected from such a slim eraser so just keep an eye on how much you extend it. This should not be a problem for typical usage.

They can be used, not only to erase pencil lines but by pressing the kneaded eraser on your drawing you can lighten the lines before adding watercolors, which make for a night painting with no lines showing.

Price for two erasers make for a nice price for the quantity. Thompson —. After years of using a non-abrasive eraser that I thought was the best I had ever used, I am going to revise my position and tell you that these erasers are the best erasers I have ever used.

I would recommend these for anything — drawing, notes, homework — anything. Hat —. The shape is perfect and much better for gripping than the large fat crayons of years ago.

Also they appear to be sturdy and less chance for breakage than regular crayons. I have every single size Set, the smaller more compact sets for traveling. I have two of the 50 Color Sets for usage at home. Highly pigmented, strong colors, the perfect set for field work and at home. They can be a little messy on your hands, but it comes off easily with a paper towel or just wash your hands with soap and water.

They work similarly to watercolor pencils but have a much smoother, heavier, and creamier lay down when dry and provide thicker coverage when wet. The colors are bright and vibrant and this set provides a great range of colors and neutrals to use for skin tones.

They can be used by applying directly to dry paper and then going over with a brush, by using a brush to pick up color directly from the pastel for lighter washes, or for the deepest coverage, applying to wet paper.

All it took was just one time of shaking and pressing for me to be able to use the marker nonstop with consistent, smooth paint flow. It works on all surfaces very well without interruption as well. If you are an artist or know someone who is, treat yourself to these markers!

This one holds the pencil firmly such that it feels all of one piece. The eraser is very handy. Fit and finish is absolutely top notch.

I have several pencils rendered useless as they have been reduced to virtual stubs, and with these they are usable again. Inserting, tightening, and removing leaves no marks on my pencils and they have a nice grip.

They fit my Staedtler hexagonals and triangulars, Prismacolor Premiers, Faber-Castell Polychromos, and Crayola Artist my collection will be growing soon, however😏.

Highly recommend! These little tykes take up the slack. Either way the pros outweigh the cons and pencils can be used a lot longer. Money saved is money earned and its always good when that one color you like so much gets a little too short you can put one of these on there and you can use it many times more.

Conley —. I am able to hold all of my graphite, charcoal and mechanical pencils as well as blending stumps, erasers, a ruler and a hobby knife in the removable leaves. There is a zippered pouch inside the front that I use to hold sharpeners, lead pointers, more erasers and a set of water brushes.

Inside the back there is an elastic strap that will hold a couple of 5. There is a pocket on the outside of the bag that I have used to hold additional pencils or slightly larger sketch pads from time to time.

I just love this pencil case! I wanted a sturdy pencil case that would be capable of holding my growing Polychromos collection plus be able to hold my Staedtler ergo soft pencils and my small collection of Prismacolor Premiers.

I still have several slots left to accommodate my expanding pencil collection and because of the design of the case I can slip a few coloring pages in the center section to take with me on an upcoming trip without having to pack a whole separate carry-on just for coloring supplies. I love the convenience this provides for my on-the-go coloring needs.

I highly recommend! I have collected hundreds of colored pencils, markers, gel pens, etc.! I was tired of searching for a color in a large bulky drawer which is why I have so many pencils now and it was taking the joy of coloring away.

As soon as it arrived I started putting it right to use! Now all my specialty and regular colors are available and very easy to get, use and replace!
