Sample travel gear

Most people on shorter trips will only need a phone, Kindle if you read a lot , and perhaps an iPad. Most travellers these days can manage with the camera on their phone and save lots of space. I switched from DSLR to smaller but high quality mirrorless cameras years ago and think they are the best option for serious travel photographers.

I pack everything in my Peak Designs bag and then place that inside my Away Everywhere Bag my personal item so I only have two pieces of luggage on travel days. Thanks for the great tips, Erin. Couple questions — does security ever want to see in the packing cubes?

I was thinking of compression ones but thought could be a pain. Also, have you ever travelled to Scotland in early July, if so, any clothing suggestions? I keep getting mixed info. Unfortunately, weather can go either way in Scotland in July.

I started taking just a carry on and backpack for week trips and am glad I changed. What I learned is not all carry ons and backpacks are the same. I pack dryer sheets with my clothes to keep them fresh smelling and I can wear clothes a couple of times feeling and smelling fresh.

Haha, we barely believe it too! They are very tightly packed at the moment. But the Away suitcases do hold a remarkable amount. Best travel tip I learn if on a one week or two week vacation. Bringing less clothes. Each outfits can be worn two times. After wearing each outfit hang up or fold neatly to be used again space out wearing days or you can wash if needed.

Did you have to check-in? And in the overhead bin, it was easy to put the baggage? We love the space it gives us! I could verify the next time at the airport during check-in, they have box frame to verify sizing, if you have not seen it already.

The kicker is, it is up to the airlines to enforce it. Sometimes, they un-officially allow when the carry-on is too big by asking and moving the carry-on to the checked bag areas.

What do you use or did you use for water purification while traveling in South America? Was the tap water safe to drink in Medellin? Thank you. Elsewhere we used bottled water. After nearly 10 years of long term travels I am now of the conclusion that you do not need any expensive, travel specific, technical clothing.

Especially in tropical climates, you can just buy local cheap market clothes such as cotton t shirts, shorts etc for next to nothing. A whole kit consisting of; 2 t shirts, 2 pairs shorts, flip flops can be got for under £ I can see how that could work.

We really notice the difference between our different types of clothes. When you only have a day before you are moving on this is inconvenient. We also appreciate the moisture-wicking nature of tech clothes for hiking and hot walks in cities and the odour-resistance reduces the frequency we have to wash stuff.

Can you give us some advice on how to pack big suitcases or even if there is a better idea for us? I intent to take a tablet and a camera, a few clothes and basic stuff.

I am super excited! Thank you for your help, I hope you are doing well and have fun wherever you are. Greetings from Greece!!

I see in the pictures that you have a hard Carry on and a soft bag. As you are only allowed ONE Bag and a small purse or small back pack. That soft bag looks way too big to be allowed as well as the other suitcase.

Curious as I only take a Hard side Carry-On size bag and a Purse. Have travelled to 65 counties for the last 50 years. The soft bag will not fit into the cage that they want to put your bag in at the boarding gate. What size are the bags you are using. The suitcase goes in the overhead locker and the soft bags fit under our seat.

Hi, Can you advise where you store important documents such as birth certificates, property papers etc while your travelling? This is such an awesome list. I love it!! All the ideas, the products you guys use etc etc.

Great thanks for putting this together for all of out here who need ideas and thoughts about carry on only desperately!!!!!! I know with all the products and links this would be hard to do, but….. do you have just a printable list?

Thanks Jennifer! I actually created one for readers of my book. Such a helpful article! What do you think about it? Looks like a great backpack for travel, I was just looking for some opinions before I made my decision… By the way, I love the content you have been posting lately :. It looks good.

You can never be sure when or if these crowdsourced things will ship though. Super helpful article! For an upcoming trip, my goal has been not to overpack like I usually do, so this is a great resource. But why bring the dock for the Nintendo Switch? My partner and I also just bought a Switch Lite just to travel with, which is handheld-only and smaller than the original one and came in a pretty yellow color.

At the beginning of the month the average temperatures are around 20ºC but this drops by about 5ºC by the end of the month. They are comfortable and warm and you can wear them without socks I find I can slip them on and off without undoing the laces which is useful in Japan.

Hi, I really love your dresses. I like how your dress in Italy I think covers your shoulders and back and is still cute floral navy dress. Would you mund sharimg yoyr dress yips.

Cheers Tanya. I have read through all your backpack information…. I am looking for a backpack for a 2 week trip to Europe. I am flying Lufthansa, and they said it has to be 22 by 16 by 9 largest…also it can only weigh 18 pounds!

So, I am curious if the Osprey Farpoint 40 would be right dimensions…. but really worried it would weigh over 18 pounds when packed?? Thoughts or suggestions?? Thanks for your help!! I will be leaving the backpack at the hotel, but wanted to use one IF possible, for easier travel on plans and trains…Kristi.

The Farpoint 40 will be the right size. Depending on what you pack you could end up going over the weight limit. We are usually over the weight limit though and find airlines rarely check.

It helps if you check in online to avoid the check-in desk. Hi Erin, Thanks you and Simon both for an info packed excellent website! Simon, did you not have the Tortuga V2 originally? What was the impetus to change to the newer models?

My S7 phone is fine and always with me. Using packing cubes in a top-loading pack is definitely a good way to manage the black hole effect of a big pack. I might go on a trip like that at some point, just to see how light I can go…but occasionally I prefer the functionality of something else, and am willing to handle the extra weight.

But of course it adds up. You are a thief. I also traveled for many years and through dozens of countries. The only problem i have with traveling this light is that no girl will take you serious in a club any where in the world when wearing ultra light zip off pants and mountain shoes.

You can also never fit in anywhere like a regular tourist or an expat since the obvious back packer vibe that surrounds you. Nice idea but no. High-tech but logo-free t-shirts look like ordinary t-shirts. Very doable. I guess the objective of international travel vary from person to person.

Obviously, what is essential will be very different to both groups. I travel super light too. My trips are usually around weeks, but I do my laundry every night, so I could conceivably travel with the same load for months. Among my clothes are 2 quick-dry T-shirts and a decent collared long sleeve shirt.

The T-shirts are for daily wear, and the long sleeved shirts are for dinner or when T-shirts are not appropriate. I wear zip-off pants daily, but I also pack a pair of lightweight black slacks that go with the long-sleeved shirt.

Chris, How about culture, history, architecture, art, food and the locals AND having an interest in local women?

In fact dating local girls will teach you a lot about the local culture. They will take you places a regular tourist or even a backpacker never comes. My wife bought a silk shirt for me prior to our 7-week bike tour in France. I wore this shirt in the camp ground and when we visited the more civilized tourist sites.

My experience is completely different! If the girls you approach can not take you serious unless you dress all up, then perhaps go for some girls with a bit more substance?

I am currently traveling around the world with a 25 liter bag and have been doing so for around 5 months now and I use hiking clothes everywhere, and for everything, since it is all I have.

I have met a lot who were either inspired, thought it was cool or even said that it is the right way to do it. I think it has more to do with your own perception on how you need to be and what other people think of you than the clothes you are wearing.

Thank you for a good article. I wonder how you got it all down in a 20 liter. I am going to upgrade because I need winter clothes for some of the next places I am going. I should probably mention that I choose a pack where everything can fit in the main compartment of the bag to protect against thieves in busses and cities etc.

Maybe that is the difference between your 20 liter and my 25? Minor secret: I had to strap the shoes to the outside of the bag, so if you wanted to fit those inside, it would have been maybe a 25 liter. Plus every company has different standards for what constitutes 20 liters, so your 20 and my 20 might be totally different.

I also include in my packing, some good painkillers, antihistamine and a tube of hydrocortisone. Every insect I come across seems to regard me as food hence the above. I skipped over that in this list because toiletries deserved their own post, which is here.

You sound seriously creepy. Tell the world where you are, so you can best be avoided. Your blog is first rate and very informative. I am a french lady and I travel with possibly a little less than OCDemon. Woman care more about the fact that u are interesting ; Tips: the Keirin Cut pants from Outlier are fantastic for traveller and look very good.

If you ever need to change you backpack, the Synapse Tom Bihn bag is fantastic while not looking like a hiking bag. Travelling light is a real advantage! Keep going ;. I have to strongly disagree with you Caro. A man can be the most interesting guy in the world but without the right looks he will be straight up rejected by most girls in clubs.

Most women are just equally shallow as men when it comes to looks. You truly have it harder than anyone else. People packing as ultra-light as you make me very jealous because I have to carry some camera equipment for my work, but if I can get everything else down to the bare bones hopefully I can still reap some of the benefits of lightening my load further.

That first part their is so on point. You sound really fucking creepy the way you keep going on about wanting to meet foreign girls in clubs.

That is impressive! Thanks for helping me rein myself in on the packing front! I would recommend Travel Fashion Girl for specifically female ultralight travel gear tips, as they actually have lists for small, medium, and large packs.

Her Packing List is also helpful. Skip the books and use a small tablet with kindle app or kindle instead. You save a lot of weight and bulk.

And a tablet is extremely versatile for traveling. Writing, blogging, reading, emails, book flight tickets, travel guides, storage for pictures use sd cards , music, movies, dropbox for backup of pictures. The list is endless and all in a small package, less than a pound even with a protective cover.

If you carry a charger then switch it for a universal charger or use the same brand as whatever else you need a charger for or get an adaptor. Obviously it is not the same as reading a real book. But I got used to it. The price you pay is a little or a lot?

more than what you normally might pay but they are absolutely one of the best options out there. The situation with shoes is actually surprising. Even if you bring multiple — though they should all have a specific use — you can definitely find more packable options that still look quite nice from some of the higher end travel companies.

Great list and article. My wife and I have learned to travel with older Deuter 40L Futura Zero packs — pack 20 lbs max — try for about if we can. Picked up a few tips from you — thanks!

I have a multipurpose packing cube, the Tom Bihn Packing Cube Backpack, that, when turned inside-out, doubles as a very handy daypack; In this case, it is sized to fit perfectly into one pocket of my go-to one-bag, the Western Flyer my review of which is here.

Since I travel mostly for work, the WF does double duty as a briefcase and a transit backpack, and the PC Backpack makes for a handy daypack for cycling or sightseeing and since it actually makes the WF easier to pack it is worth the small weight add.

It also has the eyelets on the inside to clip accessories, tablet sleeves or water bottles to suspend from the top rather than crumple to the bottom.

I keep all my clothes in an airtight, waterproof stuff sack. This makes it possible to squeeze out all the air and compress the clothes into a tight, flat shape.

Downside is, cotton items will get wrinkly. Leaves a lot more space in the bag for other things. The bag itself is super light. Outdoor Research makes some good ones. Great read.

I seek out ultralight packing lists to obsession, and this one did not disappoint. My husband mocks me relentlessly for my interest in taking as little as possible when we travel.

We have an upcoming week long trip for which I have done a couple packing dry runs. Total weight: 6 lbs. Hopefully sometime soon. Wow, great job! Definitely inspired to pack lighter for my upcoming trip, although I am moving. for the next 5 or so years. I plan on using the 30L backpack anywhere I travel to within Europe, which I thought would be quite small until I read your post.

The problem with business travel is you normally have to carry a company-issued laptop which may be heavy, ditto for the phone and any related power cables, adapters etc. I am off tomorrow for 10 weeks, work mainly but a bit of sight seeing and walking and commuter type cycling.

I am stuck on windows 10 and linux and am not interested in apple. I need to use Microsoft Office lots, and MS Excel in particular at a high level. So tablets and ultrabooks are out of the question. Where I think most people miss big weight savings is in the pack. Once you get something with multiple pockets, you are getting up over grams and as much as 2kg for liter pack.

These cells can be put in a top loading stuff sack or a single compartment duffel bag. The lightest strongest fabric used today for packs is dyneema. Using this, you can get a 40 liter pack under 0. There is a similar pack for grams that is just a stuff sack with shoulder straps.

These are also highly water resistant. These things are more prone to failing, but I just buy another one. Usually I get at least 3 months of business travel with them. The handles are long enough to allow me to wear it as a backpack, and I use the shoulder strap to wrap around it longitudinally and compress it firmly.

This always reduces it to legal carry-on dimensions. BTW, it is practically impossible to fill a 40 liter bag and keep it under 7kg. The idea of 40 liters is to put stuff in there that you were wearing once you have gone through check-in and wherever you are likely to get your pack weighed.

To travel light, you have to go through a paradigm shift. When I was younger it was nothing for me to wear the same shirt every day, week after week…cleaned regularly of course. Same for pants. And I wore a school uniform for years.

Same shirts and pants 5 days a week. If someone is going to judge me on my clothes, I am honestly glad to filter them out of my life. They will be third rate thinkers and doers.

Interesting people are into ideas and sharing them, and doing stuff, not sitting around posturing in clothes. The most interesting people do interesting stuff.

Quality people care more about what you believe and what you do rather than what image you concoct via clothing.

Outlier pants are excellent travel pants and are acceptable in business and at the beach. They are worth the price. I do carry zip off Columbia hiking pants mainly cos they are so light and they look excellent as shorts and not too bad as trousers. My toilet kit is a zip lock plastic bag for storing stuff in the freezer.

My toilet, sewing, and first aid stuff is less than grams. Seriously you only need a little toothpaste or powder. Scrap the deodorant by eating healthy , aftershave etc. If you are going out, borrow some from a mate, or collect stuff from hotels in mini bottles.

I only carry small toothpaste tubes. My S7 phone is fine and always with me. Using packing cubes in a top-loading pack is definitely a good way to manage the black hole effect of a big pack.

That is impressive! Meanwhile, the Howard Leight MAX1 might be a favorite from crowdsourced sleep-aid review site Sleep Like the Dead , but the earplugs would inevitably fall out in the middle of the night.

They come in a plastic case is about the size of a large coffee mug, which is small enough to toss in a large bag or suitcase. The lightweight and contoured Nidra mask is a light-blocking win for most face shapes, with deep eye cups that allow the wearer to blink freely and arrive feeling refreshed.

When bright lights hamper peaceful shut-eye, we recommend the light-blocking, contoured Nidra Deep Rest sleep mask. Of the 20 masks we tried over two rounds of testing , the Nidra blocked the most light on the most faces.

This design provides more space for your eyes to flutter during REM sleep, ensuring that you come through red-eye flights with less redness in your eyes.

A silken exterior material, a flat design, and an adjustable strap make this mask a fit for almost any face, but it puts pressure on the eyes.

It lacks contoured eyecups and thus applies some pressure to the eyes overnight like any regular eye mask does. But its flat design easily conforms to fit your face, and its silk exterior feels smooth and soft against skin the padding is made of cotton. It makes scratchy motel and hostel linens a lot more bearable.

A silk sleeping bag liner is a great way to insulate yourself from scratchy, cheap, poorly maintained linens you might find at a hostel or motel. This makes silk superior to cotton, which becomes uncomfortable as soon as it gets moist, and synthetics, which retain smells more readily.

Silk is also super strong, and its light weight means manufacturers can give you full body coverage in a compact package. Our favorite is the Sea to Summit Premium Silk Travel Liner , which is available in a variety of sizes, including regular, long, and even double for sharing.

Whichever you pick, it will pack down to about the size and weight of a medium-sized apple. We have also used this for sleeping on long plane flights with great success. Cocoon and Rab are the only other options when it comes to percent silk liners available online and backed by a real company with a warranty, but those come in only one size.

Few things are better than landing at an airport, turning on your phone, and having it just work. No hassles, no stress, no worries about brutal roaming fees. You can check in with loved ones, scope out the route to your lodgings, and maybe post an Instagram story or two—because your phone works just like it does at home.

This is especially freeing, and it makes travel so much easier. Unless your carrier offers plans including high-speed data that you can access internationally i.

Being able to access data-guzzling apps like Google Maps or Google Translate on the fly is worth the hassle to unlock a phone. Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp are free, easy ways to communicate with people you meet on your trip and people from home.

With a prepaid SIM, your phone effectively becomes a new phone with a new now local phone number. Your phone will also require a removable SIM which most newer phones have. Most countries require a passport or other ID to buy a prepaid SIM without a contract, but switching the SIMs is easy.

The next question is easily the most complicated: Can you unlock your phone? Each carrier has different rules and criteria. The thing to remember is that a provider can deny an unlock request without giving a reason.

You might be lucky, though; certain phones on certain providers are unlocked by default. Alternately, you can buy a pre-unlocked phone just for travel. Amazon and Best Buy, for example, sell unlocked phones.

This is also a good option if you think you might lose your expensive phone and a cheaper one will suffice while you travel.

With four plugs that will work in most countries, plus faster-charging USB ports and more of them than its competitors, this adapter is the best all-around choice.

In a sea of almost-identical travel adapters, the Epicka Universal Travel Adapter stands out, combining the best of the features we look for. It contains the three most common international plugs and a US-style plug, which should cover you in the majority of countries around the world. It has the most USB ports—four of the standard USB-A and one USB-C—of any universal adapter we tested, and it charged more of our devices faster.

A replaceable fuse and an included spare should take the brunt of any accidental, unfortunate, or shockingly bad connections. The Epicka is fairly compact and well built, and it even comes with an extra USB cable and a nylon case. Individually, these tiny plug adapters are smaller, lighter, and cheaper than any universal travel adapter.

The tiny plug adapters from Ceptics are barely larger than the prongs they convert. Like our universal adapter picks, this set contains the three most common international plugs and the US plug. However, it also includes a somewhat rarer plug used in some European countries that has two thick, cylindrical prongs.

This means that the Ceptics set will likely cover you in even more places—as long as you pack the appropriate plug adapter. These charts should help you find the shape you need before you order. Case in point: One Wirecutter editor visited Iceland a few years back. It turns out the mystery sockets belonged to an obscure Italian system from the s that was popular in Iceland for a time.

Luckily, the hosts had power strips in the house that her adapters fit into. Whether two-prong or three-prong, an adapter just changes the shape of your plug, not anything about the electricity coming through the wires.

This includes the vast majority of modern laptop and USB chargers. Products without some sort of power block at the end or with a non-detachable cord—in particular, things with heating elements like hair dryers and curling irons—are more likely to need a voltage converter.

But voltage converters are tricky devices, and most of the inexpensive ones have awful or dishonest reviews. Since hotels and hostels will often have hair dryers and most newer gear can do the full range of voltages, we strongly recommend that, whenever possible, you only bring items that work with a much simpler and more reliable adapter.

And unless you organize them, you can bet on having to blindly fish them out of the least convenient spot at the bottom of your bag. Unfortunately, our pick for carrying tech necessities, the Incase Nylon Accessory Organizer, has been out of stock for a few years.

It will, however, be coming back in , according to Incase. The Zendure SuperMini 20W is about as small and lightweight as a power bank can possibly be while still offering enough capacity to juice up most smartphones up to three times.

Its USB-C Power Delivery PD port can charge most handheld devices and recharge the power bank itself at top speed with the included USB-C cable and a compatible wall charger the one that came with your phone will work.

The USB-A port can handle any older, non-USB-C devices you might have kicking around, too. Amazingly affordable with great optics, these binoculars have performance comparable with that of many models that cost thousands more.

Our top pick for binoculars is durable and great for near-home hikes. In hot or dusty environments that may call for a clearer optical boost, the Athlon Optics Midas ED 8×42 binoculars deliver top quality.

Its focus dial offers a wide range of depths that makes it easier to see whatever it is you desire—birds, grass or darkened areas of the forest. Our recommendation comes with the assistance of a professional ornithologist who spent over hours putting 17 pairs of binoculars to the test in the mountains of Southern California and the rain forests of southern Mexico.

The TrailSeekers are equipped with great light-gathering qualities, close focus, and impressive optical resolution. Those features bring it in line with much-pricier e-readers. The entry-level Amazon Kindle finally got an upgrade, with the same crisp display and USB-C charging as the pricier Kindle Paperwhite has and with double the storage space of the previous entry-level model.

Furthermore, e-texts will also work on your phone, tablet, and computer, thanks to the Kindle ecosystem. And in our experience, the implied way to carry a full one correctly—clipped to a backpack or belt loop—left them swinging around haphazardly.

Basic, light, and cheap, a squeeze bottle made for cycling is now our sincere recommendation for airport travel, and we like the CamelBak Podium in particular. Packing a stowable daypack, one that stuffs down to fit in your luggage when not in use, is a relatively small investment of space in exchange for a high return of function and flexibility.

After researching dozens of packable daypacks across a spectrum of portability, features, and prices, and then packing, unpacking, loading, wearing, and drenching the top-rated finalists during multiple rounds of testing, the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Travel Day Pack is the smallest and lightest packable backpack we recommend.

Packed up, it is very discreet: nearly the size of a keychain accessory. It has reinforced stitching at stress points, allowing the Ultra-Sil to carry more weight than you would expect. That said, since this pack is made of such thin, light material, carrying large or awkwardly shaped loads is somewhat uncomfortable, especially when compared with our more structured picks.

If comfort or waterproofing is important to you, check out the alternative picks in our review of packable daypacks for travel. Field Notes are cheap but contain high-quality paper that earns praise from pen and stationery geeks across the web. The synthetic paper feels weird and can cause some inks to smear.

You should only get these if you really need them, because otherwise, they just feel unnaturally slick and are more prone to smearing ink.

At least one user has said that the paper shows less soaking through when wet than the similar Rite in the Rain books. The one caveat is that the synthetic paper will only work with pencils and certain inks ; thankfully, the Uni-ball Jetstream RT , our pick for best pen , definitely makes the grade.

A good travel-size sewing kit allows you to mend a popped button or ripped seam on the fly—or even tackle more pressing issues like fixing a tent, sleeping bag, or backpack. Standard travel sewing kits usually contain mediocre thread and plastic-handled scissors that break easily.

They can also be hard to keep organized a truth we confirmed when testing six top-rated travel and full-sized kits. Because the sewing pins are neatly stuck into paper inside a slim envelope and the three needles are housed in a mini glass vial, this kit also limits the risk of losing a sharp object in your bags.

and we also like the vintage-looking safety pins that come clipped together along with two small white buttons. We do think it would be nice if the kit included a more durable measuring tape than the paper one included, but overall everything about this kit is leagues ahead of anything else we considered.

This is a solidly built, easy-to-find umbrella that holds up in high winds. It also comes in a variety of colors. An umbrella you take traveling should be small, light, sturdy, and affordable. After putting in 66 hours of research and evaluating a total of 48 umbrellas across five rounds of testing including one thunder-snowstorm , we found that the Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella is the best umbrella for most people.

The Repel folds up to an 11½-inch long, ounce package that fits easily into most bags and glove boxes. And it forcefully expands at a touch of a button to reveal an ample inch-diameter canopy that protects your head and torso from precipitation in all but the windiest of conditions.

Its lengthy, textured handle is easy to grip for hands of all sizes. a packing cube full of underwear and socks. The resulting bundle is compact and has no sharp creases that will require ironing out later on.

But unpacking is a good habit to get into anyway, as it allows your clothes to breathe and avoid wrinkles or mildew. Wirecutter founder and frequent traveler Brian Lam says that unpacking the moment he enters a room has a grounding effect that allows him to feel a bit more at home in a new environment.
