If you didn't finish the sample on reading it the first time, download it again. When did this change? I've been using an iPad to read books for 10 years and have read and downloaded hundreds of samples over the years.

This is the first time I have not been able to read a book sample I have downloaded. If Apple has made this change I will switch to Kindle.

We cannot speculate here about why Apple does or does not do certain things. But if I owned and could govern Apple, I would also make samples disappear. I believe the previous behavior was that book samples were saved on the specific device that obtained them. I have several devices using the Books app under my Apple ID: iPhone, iPad, Mac.

Other devices could not access these samples without downloading them. I am not certain when this behavior changed to the current model - after iOS 12, but I don't know how long after. This sounds perfectly reasonable. But "let people read books in their store" means there's a limit on where or how long they can peruse the sample.

They cannot, for example, take the sample home without purchasing the book. I do not mean to imply that samples are a bad idea, should not be allowed, or anything of the sort. I do mean that samples are not something to be archived.

You have to check both ebook and paper version to make sure they aren't doing the stupid and showing the end. The paper version is a different story since they have this stupid feature that should be shot in the head and lit on fire. Except it almost always shows the end pages. You'll need to use the Contact Us link to email them about the issue. Give them the ISBN number and which countries are messed up. I only worried about US and UK markets, but if you are selling in other countries, check those stores as well.

When they get back to you saying it's fixed, give it a couple days and then double check their work. I had them adjust my book and they fixed it on UK but it was still broken on US. I screenshotted the end page and replied to their 'success' mail with the inserted pic and said nope, not fixed, try again.

They got it fixed after that. So always check after you update a book, and always check the various Amazon stores you are selling in to make sure they aren't showing all the pages seen that before or the ending.

I had the same problem with the Look Inside feature. I complained about it several times via replies to their useless responses to my original contact and their screwy corrections to the LITB feature that didn't really address the problem.

I finally got someone that said they would take up the problem of the SPOILER possibility with higher levels. They have now changed the LITB for my book to eliminate the display of any pages from the end of the book.

I was given the impression maybe just my hopeful wishes that this would be something done system wide, but maybe it was just for my book. I don't like that, but I am tired of arguing with them and at least they no longer show pages from the end of the book.

Plus, if you buy the book, it automatically deletes the sample for you. It's a great way to keep track of "To Read" books without buying the book up front. Its like a To Read Shelf in Goodreads almost.

The sample is exactly the same as the Look Inside, but it does allow you to see if the bad formatting revealed in the Look Inside was suppressed during for for Kindle display.
