I have been there done that, forgotten to include these in my budget planning, and then had to scramble to find the money for them at the end of the project. I break my home makeover budgets into four categories. If you download my free room makeover budget spreadsheet, it is broken down this way.

This is the renovation portion of the budget. Everything that stays with your home when you leave is an easy way to look at this. I like to plan my DIY projects and budget for these in a separate section since they can often be started ahead of time.

This is a DIY blog, after all ;. This is one of the areas I hear people go over their DIY renovation budget. They plan to have a fun DIY element to save money but forget to account for some of the bits to make that happen.

Heck yes! But what do you add to that DIY renovation budget spreadsheet? Here are some reminders to make sure your DIY renovation budget is complete. Line Items for Your Budget in your DIY renovation budget This is my list of things you want to make sure you remember when creating your budget.

Budget for Room Upgrades This is the renovation portion of the budget. Paint and primer Playing with new paint colors is so much fun! But remember to factor this cost into your final tally. I like to go with the higher quality paint so it adds up. It is especially easy to forget the primer, which is essential to furniture and cabinet painting projects.

See my tips on selecting paint colors. Tools and equipment Account for any tools or equipment you need to purchase or rent for your projects. I like to work through the entire project in your mind instead of picturing the finished product!

Need to sand down those hardwood floors to refinish them? Planning to tile your shower surround yourself? How about a tile saw? Are you ready to invest in a miter saw for all your trim and that dreamy DIY moulding wall? Write it down! This can include shower surround, tile full or half wraps of a room or just a backsplash in a kitchen, bathroom or laundry room.

Get a quote or look a price per square footage and give yourself a healthy buffer when budgeting cost here. Electrical and plumbing? Gas fitting and cabinet installation? Add those line items in! Also, consider going bargain hunting on MarketPlace instead.

Either way, this is not something to leave until the last second. Plumbing: Faucets, shower heads, bathtubs, laundry basins, hot water spigots and pot fillers … if your space will have water, make sure to factor in your plumbing fixtures.

Moving plumbing also increases costs in material and trades so keep that in mind when floor planning. Hardware Upgrading your door hardware or cabinet hardware?

What about door hinges, vent covers and face plates? I like to add alll these things in here. But what about closets? Laundry rooms? Include not just the cabinets and doors, but also any upgrades or inserts drawers are more expensive than just cabinets with doors!

I like to include them in this section. Kitchen appliances include fridge, freezer, oven, dishwasher, microwave, hood fan, and any additional upgraded appliances you might like.

Either throw them here or under furnishings. Choose whichever page fits your style best! The budget planner, budget tracker, and payment tracker will allow you to stay on top of the key part of any home renovation — money!

We immediately got to work and after 3 days of priming, painting and sealing, we were done with the cabinets. We investigated pouring our own concrete countertops, but decided that we were not ready to take the plunge quite yet, so I once again turned to Pinterest, where I stumbled upon this blog post with steps detailing how to pretty easily convert your existing countertops to polished concrete coated ones.

We decided that this was the only way for us to go at least for now until we are possibly ready to professionally update them in the future. We ordered our 4.

It arrived on or doorstep a few days later and Ted got to work. He followed the directions on the blog very closely, and a few days later we had smooth concrete covered countertops.

Ted took an orbital sander to them once they were dry to smooth them out even more thanks mom and dad. We wanted to stain the concrete a darker charcoal color for a nice contrast, so we went to Home Depot and got this 5. We applied 2 coats with a spray bottle and a small paint roller.

We wanted the end result to be very high gloss wet look , so after the stain dried, we applied coats of this 6. The concrete stain has a navy blueish tint to it for a couple weeks or so after it is applied. We sealed over it while it had the blue tint. We have enough white subway tiles already on hand to complete the project we got them for free awhile back , but felt that they might be too much white.

After collecting samples from various places, we finally decided on 35 sq. of light olive colored glass subway tiles. We removed the old tiles and realized that there was no way around the fact that no matter how gentle and precise we were, we were tearing off drywall with each section of removed tile nothing is ever as easy as you think it is going to be.

We decided that Ted would just rip the walls out from behind the older tile and re-sheetrock the areas that were damaged.

I used the same paint mixture to paint the insides of our one double glass front cabinet and then installed 3 battery operated lights inside the cabinets to add some much needed light and interest. We are very happy with our splurge though. You can also check excellent articles on Bob Smith Tools.

After 2. The countertops were also doing really well. There are a few small chips in them, but I fix them by taking a Qtip of the concrete stain to them and adding another Q-tip of the sealer or by touching up the paint as needed.
