Budget-friendly teething biscuits

Thanks Kristy for posting this. I have just baked them and they are already a success with my little one. Thanks again. I was wondering how old you started your little one on these? My son is 4 and a half months and is gnawing on everything like your son was and is cranky.

Was just curious if he would be okay using these? I started at 4 month too!! I made these with quinoa flake cereal and oat flour and they turned out great.

My 10 month old loved them! Thanks so much for this! I know what a mix!! hahahh I also added a bit of nutmeg and they turned out great!! And peanut butter. And strawberries. There are also concerns about the arsenic in baby rice cereal. Looks good!

I tried these today. I added one extra banana and I dont use rice cereal but instead Ive always ground up organic brown rice and given that to my LO. They turned out a little harder than I expected, but I am going to try again on a lower temp.

I think my oven is pretty strong. Thank you for sharing! Ive been really searching for a ggod receipe.

February 20, 85 Comments My little guy cut his first two teeth just over a week ago. I meant to buy some teething biscuits at the store but kept spacing it, so I just made some myself! Baby likes!! Save Recipe.

Adapted from My So Called Mommy Life. Comments This is perfect!!! What a little Heart-Breaker!!!! He is absolutely Adorable!!!! I may keep them in there overnight at low and see what happens.

They taste good even without the molasses! Not sure why but i had to add almost two extra cups of flour and bake for An extra 30 minutes. This is the second time ive made it too, following exact directions. I cooked for a complete 60 minutes.

Outside was hard but inside was not. Is this normal or was something off? That should work, but they might be more crumbly. You might need to add a little more liquid to the mix. I tried one first and it was hard, but dark color 8n the middle and softer. The hard part on the outside had some small pieces that would break off.

I am concerned that he will get a hard piece and choke. Did I just not cook it long enough? I made these and only left out the molasses and baked for over 1. Any thoughts on what I could do to fix this please? I broke one in half and the inside is soft and the some of the outside did crumble.

Otherwise super tasty and great for grain free. May just try it with molasses exactly as you have but I would eventually like to leave out syrup and molasses without getting it wrong. Thanks so much!

I think it might have to do with leaving it out. Bake them longer if you need, sometimes I have had to. Let them turn into big stale cookies, lol.

I love this recipe. I tried tapioca starch instead but they were still a bit chewy and spread out lots in the oven plus the batter was very thin and runny but both my boy and I enjoyed eating them.

I could then roll into log shaped thick biscuits. I baked for an hour but then turned the oven off and left them in the oven to cool and continue gently cooking as they were a bit doughy in the centre.

My boy just happily mouthed it for 45 minutes down to a piece small enough I just ate the last bit. Your email address will not be published. These have truly saved the dreaded dinner hour when I'm trying to feed my 8 month old and cook dinner at the same time.

With one of these in her hand, she gives me a few minutes in between bites of her purees to chop and stir what everyone else is having for dinner!

I just used hardened whole wheat toast for my older two children, but these are so much sturdier not to mention easier for the baby to hold. Thank you!

Kayla - It's basically stale bread so the rule would be as long as there's no mold you should be fine. Not sure I could give a specific time frame.

My 16 month old daughter has her molars coming now and has been cranky and eating less because of the pain. I was not sure if these would help now that she has a full front row of teeth to chew this.

I used whole wheat bread, and just used finely blended fresh apple as a spread. No cinnamon. She simply loved it and ate 4 of these in one go, and it really helped soothe her gums too. Brilliant idea, thank you for this! Ni Nina - that depends on your baby and what you are comfortable with.

All I can tell you is my son is 6 months in these photos. How young can you start your baby on these? My daughter is 4 months and 2 weeks and has been eating cereal since she turned 4 months, she took to cereal like she'd been eating for years, never even spit it out. She is teething and biting everything, I was hoping to buy her teething biscuits but they say 9 months and up on them, Im assuming because they crumble?

Cynthia - it could be the bread you used or the amount of time you cooked it. Even store bought teething biscuits may chunk. Just be sure to supervise. I tried this the other day. My son only has 2 bottom teeth and somehow he was able to bite a big chunk off. Did I not heat it long enough?

Please let me know! I would like to try it again! I just made one didn't have applesauce but used squash puree my grandson is enjoying it now. Thak you so much. I'm glad I'm not the only one who burn it on the 1st attempt LOL. I used Banana baby food. My son LOVED it!!! Thanks for sharing!

wish I had known to o tis with my first to sons! I just went away and made these, they are amazing! So easy to do, and my girls eyes were all lit up! Thank you for an easy yet healthy teething option. Anybody try in the oven and can give some advice? Our first attempt and by our, I mean I read this page and comments , they didn't roll well bread broke ; spread is ripe pear instead of applesauce.

Used Vermont Bread Co Organic multi-grain, no seeds. Microwaved for 60 seconds, still seemed soft, did another They are cooling now. We bought the Earth's Best Barley and Healthy Times Vanilla both organic before finding this recipe, so have a comparison point once we make them right.

My baby loves these! But these are amazing. Inexpensive, convenient and healthy! Thank you so much! Dd is loving these! FYI, mine burned heating it 60 seconds. But if I heated it for 60 seconds in 15 second intervals and briefly rolled it on the plate before the next 15 seconds it turned out great.

What exactly caught on fire? The bread? Maybe you have a more powerful microwave, trying cutting time in half and then checking the hardness. I can honestly say I never had bread catch on fire before and I used at least 3 different types.

I just did this and caught the microwave on fire before the minute was even up. Used "white wheat" bread. I pinned this so long ago but used it today for the first time. My daughter is 14 months and her side teeth are coming in.

This is the perfect size and shape for those awkward spots. She's struggling with the teething rings but she is enjoying this. Thanks for the great idea! I wouldn't worry.

My microwave takes a while also. I just keep heating it up. Just use small increments as it gets drier or it will burn. ok, now it's really strange because that's what I used in the photos, at least I'm pretty sure.

I only buy 2 types of bread and that's on of them! I thought so too. I gave it to him anyways and it seemed okay. I did probably have to do 2 min and 30 seconds total at 10 sec intervals so the bread didn't burn.

I tried this, and my newest loved it! Took two tries. The first one I nuked--for 60 seconds--caught on fire!

Smoke was everywhere. So did it again, microwaving and flipping at 7 second intervals, and it came out perfectly. My daughter gnawed and sucked that thing into a disgusting slimy mess. Might not make it everyday for that reason, but it's definitely something to do before bath time. Kristina - I do not see why it would not work with GF breads.

The only thing I can see being different would be that the texture of GF breads tend to be denser and drier. They might break up rather than squish down like regular bread does. If I was making this with GF bread I woudl use a rolling pin to flatten the bread down rather than fingers because of the texture difference.

GF breads tend to be more like the texure of french or italian breads rathern than regular bread for those who do not know. Also I beleive the guide lines for giving gluten products to a baby are 6 months. If there is a history of celiac or intestinal issues of any kind in the family I would go with 1 year or at least when the child is talking well enough to let you know their tunny hurts after eating.

I want to avoid wheat until my baby is older. Do you think this could be made with gluten-free bread? Paizley - I'm not sure you got it right, mine came out so hard I could barely bite through it. Maybe longer next time?

Or a different kind of bread? Candace, I'm not sure you could get the same pretified bread in the oven, maybe a low temp for a long time? Not sure though never tried it. Did I do this wrong or misunderstand?

I guess since my son 6 mo has two bottom teeth this is a bad idea. Is this only for babies with no teeth? Sorry if this sounds dumb. Has anyone made these in the oven? I'm curious how long you cooked them. We don't use a microwave. I'm not sure what you mean by "crumbs. Maybe try another kind?

I made these for my 6 month old son right after seeing this, they turned out great and my son loves them!

Its a great idea though if we can find alternatives to these two parts of the recipe. Any other ideas for something like this? Actually steaming and microwaving veggies is the best way to cook as it preserves more of the nutrients then baking and roasting!

This is a great recipe thanks for posting it. These are for teething and the ones sold in stores are a choking hazard. Really don't know how they have been prepaired or processed or handled! God bless you and your family anf enjoy life while we are still here!

I tried this today and it turned out perfectly. i gave it to my daughter after her nap, she loved it at first, but after a few mins she started choking on it. she is 6 months old. great recipe but going to wait unil she's older to try it again. very scary experience.

My Mother Purchased some teething biscuits for my 10 month old son and gave one to him but she said they just crumbled up and even with NO teeth he bit a chunk out of it! I decided to try to make some for him and found this recipe so I sprayed it with I cat believe its not butter he hates all things apple and sprinkled a little cinnamon on it rolled it and microwaved it for 60 seconds.

It seemed to take forever to cool so I popped it in the freezer. My son had been gnawing on this thing for over an hour! He has it in his little fist and has crawled all over the room, pulled up on furniture and played with his toys without letting it go! The best part is that he couldn't care less about what I am doing so I have been able to take care of housework without him getting fussy!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! That's up to you. Did you talk to you doctor about starting solids? I think between months is normal but I'm not professional. Thanks for the recipe! I can't wait to try this!

We are doing BLW with my daughter, and this seems like something she could easily teeth on and enjoy! Awsome idea.. really nice one i will try this today itself plz share some more basic receipes like this.

I made these for my 6 month old son right after seeing this, they turned out great and my son loves them! They work better then any other teething biscuit I've found to make.

Thank you so muchfor this! Could you make a bunch up and freeze them? It would be hard and cold, and feel good on my little ones gums. Have you tried that? Awesome idea!! My five month old loved this! Until it got so slippery that he couldn't keep a good grip on it anymore, but that's ok!

I love that it didn't break into pieces like Gerber teething biscuits. I told all my friends about this! Saw this on pinterest this morning and immediately went to the kitchen.

My son has been struggling with teething for weeks now and refuses any biscuits I've tried. Needless to say this one is already gone!! Thank you 🙂.

I'm pretty sure the recommendation is to avoid anything honey until 1 year. Good luck on your next batch! Someone posted this in the September group on Babycenter. Check out the pics of all the little ones enjoying this recipe!!! Like Reyna, I tried this but it burned in the microwave! I didn't realize I was using "Honey Wheat" at one minute and it smoked up the whole kitchen!

Little boy is in love with this! He's a mess from smearing it all over, but I don't care. So glad I found this recipe! When I handed it to her she looked at me as if we were breaking some sort of rule. Mine did burn just a bit so you might want to start with a shorter cook time just in case.

My son is a little past this, but this is such a great idea!! I try not to give him too much bread, he would just eat it all now, lol, but at the sucking and gnawing stage, this would have been great.

Kristi - I can't imagine that dried out bread is anything like a mum mum. My son did and does love those as well. Protein-rich quinoa is the only ingredient in this crispy cracker.

The result is these wonderful little baby teething biscuits that have been a big hit with Baby Girl!! They are the perfect size for little hands to grab and feed herself 🙂 Miss Independant will not let me feed her!

LOL 🙂 She has to feed herself her bottles, food and she has even mastered the sippy cup so she does that by herself too 🙂. I love that these baby teething biscuits are made with whole foods and are super easy to make! I hope your lil one loves them as much as Baby Girl does 🙂.

Depends on how old your baby is when they start getting teeth. My daughter was about 6 months old when I first made them for her. Mine turned out a little too moist — not really stiff enough to be a teething biscuit. I should have added more oatmeal after the banana and coconut oil were incorporated.

I guess my banana was a little big! So sorry Vanessa! I guess bananas 🍌 do come in various sizes. Lol 😆 I think a bit more oatmeal would help. Thanks for letting me know. Do you think one could substitute coconut oil for peanut butter?

Coconut oil is quite expensive in our area. Do you think a jar of pureed baby food such as pears would be a good substitute for the banana? Hi Michelle, Thanks for reaching out! My babies ate them anyway but they were soft and cookie like with no crunch. First, coconut flour is a high fiber flour that required way more liquid, and often eggs, to bind flour together.

Then, coconut flour is way too high in fiber for babies, it can be difficult to swallow or too fulfilling. Above it said to look at recipe card for arrowroot. This may be obvious I just want to make sure! For this recipe, tapioca flour, arrowroot flour and corn flour can be used in same amount. Set it aside. In a large mixing bowl, whisk all the dry ingredients: oat flour, rice flour, baking powder, and cinnamon if your baby is over 12 months old. Make a well in the center of the flours and add melted coconut oil, unsweetened applesauce, and vanilla essence.

Stir with a spatula at first, then knead by hand until the dough comes together. This baby cracker dough is tough, and that's normal. Note that Bamba is smaller than a typical teething biscuit and contains a common allergen , so it's important to closely monitor your child while eating them.

Always consult with your pediatrician before introducing allergens. Bamba recently made headlines when the AAP recommended using it to prevent allergies.

So, what is the recommendation? The AAP recommends introducing peanut butter into the diet at 6 months of age, along with solid foods, to prevent the risk of lifelong allergy. Mesh feeders can be a great option for soothing teething gums for babies six months and older.

We like Munchkin's BPA-free mesh feeders that feature a child-proof top-lock to prevent them from opening. The mesh design enables your baby to safely try different foods and flavors. Try using partially frozen or chilled fruits and veggies in the feeder, as foods that are frozen solid could be too hard for your baby's gums.

Mesh feeders should not replace regular feeding, as you want to make sure the baby is developing the skills to eat from spoon, chew and swallow.

Also, be sure to wash the mesh feeder after each use to prevent bacterial growth. When it comes to soothing your little one's teething woes, start by massaging your infant's gums. The AAP recommends using your knuckles to gently massage your infant's gums, particularly with little ones who may have started teething before they have been introduced to solid foods.

If your baby is continuing to display discomfort, there is another non-nutritive option. Dampening a washcloth, knotting it and allowing it to chill in the refrigerator or freezer is a perfectly acceptable option.

Your little one will be able to gnaw on the knotted fabric and self-soothe for an extended period of time. Teething biscuits are only suitable for babies that are safely taking solid foods. If your baby has not transitioned to solids yet, consider a non-nutritive gum soother such as a dampened and chilled washcloth.

If you are looking for a cold food option, try a mesh feeder with partially frozen of chilled fruit. As always when it comes to ingredients, the simpler, the better. Try to pick products with the fewest ingredients and additives.

Make sure that the biscuits are an easily dissolvable solid to reduce the risk of choking. Lastly, if your baby has been diagnosed with a food allergy, be sure to check the ingredient list to ensure it does not include the allergen.

You can start to give your baby teething biscuits once they have introduced solids into their diet, around 4 to 6 months of age. Always consult with your child's pediatrician before starting solids or introducing a teething biscuit.

If we are not cautious of size, texture, and readiness to self-feed, then yes, a baby can choke on teething biscuits.

This is why it is so important to introduce teething biscuits safely. Do not introduce teething biscuits if your infant has not displayed the ability to take solids.

Always monitor your infant while they are consuming the teething biscuit. Make sure you are providing age-appropriate sizes that are not choking hazards.

And finally, do not use teething necklaces or bracelets made of amber, wood, marble, or silicone, as they are also considered choking hazards. The AAP does recommend the use of teething biscuits—along with specific cold items, safe chew toys, massage, and certain medications—for teething pain.

Feeding our children is personal, and with the abundance of baby-food products on the market, it can also be overwhelming. To write this article, Lauren Cohen , MS, RD, consulted with trusted peers in the pediatric healthcare system and referenced multiple studies and papers.

She looked to the AAP for infant feeding and teething recommendations as well as the FDA for infant food regulations.

She used her experience in clinical practice to inform her category-specific choices and furthered her education on infant food ingredients by diving deeper into published clinical research.
