Every time you visit one of their restaurants, you help to feed a refugee in need. Ben's Chili Bowl has been a DC staple since The counter, booths, and stools are all original at the U Street location; the fresh homemade chili, half-smokes, and banana pudding are still made with love, using the same recipes, and service and quality are guiding principles.

You'll also find Ben's on H Street and at National Airport. A little bit about the history of Ben's and why you'll probably hear people talk about it all over the city and on every website listing places to eat in DC is below.

When Ben's first began in the late '50s, U Street, where Ben's is located, was known as "Black Broadway. It was common to see such luminaries as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Nat King Cole, Redd Foxx, Dick Gregory, or Martin Luther King Jr.

at "The Bowl. In , the assassination of Dr. King lit a fuse of rage. Riots ensued. Most of the city closed down, but Ben's remained open.

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee SNCC , located across the street, obtained special police permission to allow Ben's to stay open after curfew to provide food and shelter for activists, firefighters, and public servants desperately trying to restore order.

After the riots, the area was in shambles. Ben's continued to serve food, and people saw Ben's as a place where the community could be rebuilt. Ben's continues to be a celebration of DC's African American history, culture, and character. From politicians to comedians and actors to famous singers, you'll recognize the photos on the walls at their original location!

It's a celebration of DC, and U Street's resilience. Ben's Chili Bowl's half-smoke was voted DC's signature dish and is the most popular item on their menu.

Highly recommend the spicy half-smoke if you like a little bit of a kick! Andy's Pizza is my absolute favorite pizza spot in the DMV! They have four locations in DC and several around Northern Virginia in Alexandria, Tyson's, and Arlington.

They won the Worldwide Pizza Championships in , and honestly, I can't disagree. Their NY-style Pizza is the closest we've found to an authentic NY slice, but it really is a great vibe all around. Our favorites are the buffalo chicken and house pepperoni.

Gloria's is a local spot that we love for the Papusas located in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of DC, and it's the perfect spot to stop in for an authentic Salvadoran meal. If you've never tried Salvadoran food, DC is a great place to try it for the first time!

The D. area is home to over , Salvadorans, representing the largest group of people of Hispanic origin in the area. In DC, Salvadorans settled in the neighborhoods of Mount Pleasant, Adams Morgan , and Columbia Heights.

You'll find several Salvadoran spots in the neighborhood, but Gloria's Restaurant is our favorite. My favorite spot for a bagel around DC is Bullfrog Bagels. They do incredible smoked meats that taste delicious on top of your bagel!

They've been serving up my favorite bagels in DC since and offer a NY-style bagel that is so good on a Saturday or Sunday, perfect for breakfast before hitting the National Mall or any other fun things you might have going on for the day. They have locations all across DC, and you can expect to wait a long time in line, so I recommend ordering online before you arrive!

Arepas are a Venezuelan dish and stuffed cornmeal cakes that are crispy and fluffy inside. Arepas are eaten at all times of the day, often as a snack or side dish to a main meal. Just one Arepa tends to fill me up for lunch! Arepa Zone started off as a pop-up in Union Market and now has several locations across DC and one in Northern Virginia.

I still remember when they first opened back in and trying an arepa for the first time. They are so so good! Eastern Market is one of the few historic public market buildings left in Washington, DC, and the only one that has retained its original public market function.

The Eastern Market building is designated as a National Historic Landmark. The market has been in continuous operation since This food hall is open daily and has affordable options inside, but on weekends, tons of spots pop up outside Eastern Market as part of the farmer's market and flea market.

It's a great place to start your day since it's close to the Capitol and many museums in DC. Roaming Rooster started as a food truck in in Washington, DC. Within months, they went viral on social media, and for good reason - their chicken sandwiches are incredible!

Since then, the popularity of the only food truck in DC serving tasty free-range chicken has grown massively, and they now have several different restaurant locations around DC, Maryland, and Virginia. My absolute favorite thing from here is the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich.

It's so tasty, and they let you choose your spicy level; for me, that's medium to mild HA! See the list of all 12 sites we checked out. Visiting Detroit? See our Detroit Trip Planner.

Since its establishment in , this restaurant in Southwest Detroit has become a popular destination due to its affordable yet high-quality menu. The sliders, which come in various flavors like Cuban and Korean, are the stars of the show.

However, Green Dot Stables also offers options for vegetarians and vegans. Slide 1 of Cool little place. Waited a bit for a table on a Saturday but were able to have a drink and wait in the patio area which was nice and also enclosed.

Personally the regular burger slider was overcooked but still good. I enjoyed the Philly but the fish one was the best. I didn't get a photo of the fish slider or the Mac n cheese but i loved them both!

Bar service was a little slow but everyone working was friendly. Came here for dinner with a bunch of friends. Place wasn't bad. Nice for a good hangout. Food was decent. Had the Philly cheese slider and venison chili cheese fries.

Slider was pretty good although for the price I thought I could get more but it's still good. It did take a bit to get the food but service was still good. Recommended: this is a diverse pub-type dining restaurant that is for for any type of crowd. Large variety of drinks and cocktails. The menu in my opinion is how all American restaurants should be run.

They give you small portions. There are sliders and fries as the main meals, but then some sides, like cucumber and cream with red onion or kale salad.

The sliders and fries are all unique with their ingredients. There are options like Korean kimchi or chili cheese dog. The fries have things like poutine or truffle oil and herb. The atmosphere is a bit dark and brooding, but there's enough light at your individual tables.

Great spot for a quick bite. The whole menu is centered around their extensive list of sliders which are very reasonably priced.

We ordered three each and a side and that was a perfect amount of food. The hot chicken was a favorite of ours, along with the BBQ bacon. The sweet potato on there seems odd, but fits in quite nicely. The Mac and cheese had a very unique flavor, but was amazing!

The noodles were a shape I had not seen in Mac and cheese before. The fries were thin and delicious! My daughter took me here after a museum day. Their selection of sliders made it hard to decide, we had a selection of a few. Then i had another for dessert on top of that.

Loved the variety of flavors. Walk-in: This is a nice place, but MAN was it crowded. This spot is perfect for college students. We were greeted and seated and it took a moment for our food assistant to get us together. Once we finally got our order in and it arrived I will admit that it was not very appealing to the eye.

But the little burgers were tasty. Overall: it's an ok spot. Something just to kick back and have a drink. Great place to visit in Detroit. Very tasty small plates. They recommend you get 3 to 4 items per person.

Great salads, the clam chowder soup is tasty, burgers are delicious. You cannot go wrong with your order.

Always friendly staff and fast service. When you walk in, actually even just from outside, you think there isn't much to this place. And maybe that's part of the deal. The food is good, service is fast, and the price is absolutely right.

Simple and sweet. I've now been twice, a buddy of mine damn near made it his job this summer to visit every time he crossed in Detroit. He bought a shirt. Big fan. Good food good service good beer.

One of Detroit's most distinctive dining options is Green Dot. As soon as you enter, the "steady" motif is clear. There are more than 20 different sliders on the food menu, along with sides, soups, and desserts.

Along with other discounts, they provide a "mystery meat" each week. Most of the sliders on the menu have been tested by myself. Despite the fact that some may be uncomfortable for you, they are all worthwhile. This is a wonderful place if you're looking for a quick, inexpensive meal.

Favorite was fried chicken and Lansing hot chicken and pouting fries. The mystery drink, with gin was delicious as well. Our server, Kaylis, did a great job!

Highly recommend this place!!!! Mini sliders here are great. Can try many varieties since mini sliders are ordered individually. Favorite sliders were the Cuban and Buffalo chicken. Shoestring fries are also really good.

Even tried the fluffernutter slider for dessert. It's a popular place so expect to wait a while to get in and to get your food. We waited 45 minutes for a bunless burger their gluten-free option.

What takes so long to cook a slider?? Because it's so busy it is very loud with the people talking and the TVs on. The food was yummy and staff was friendly. The truffle fries are so amazing, you should definitely get those. This is a hidden gem 💎 of Detroit!

Super low key place , with a short menu of all the delicious sliders 🍔 salads 🥗 and soups 🍲 so as desserts 🍨 🤤 Highly recommend trying chicken sliders, rustic salad and clam chowder!! top notch 👌 Ambience is great - wooden tables, comfortable chairs.

The service was fast and waiters were nice and friendly, suggesting all the best food to try when we asked. Everything with pickles turned out to be our favorite!

will be coming back! Slide 1 of 5. Hot dog restaurant. American restaurant. Fast food restaurant. Show 2 more. Lafayette Coney Island, a renowned hot dog eatery, offers a straightforward menu consisting of chili-topped dogs, burgers, and fries.

Located on the corner of Michigan Avenue and Lafayette Boulevard in Detroit, this establishment is known for its friendly competition with its neighbor, American Coney Island. Both joints were established by rival brothers in the early s. Lafayette Coney Island boasts a delectable taste and inviting atmosphere.

Born and raised here and never been until now. What a great experience. If you haven't gone, go. Great people doing Detroit proud since We were even shown a trick at the counter. And located the bathroom in the basement down a narrow stairwell.

That they lovingly call the dungeon. Very Very Old school, not exactly sparkling clean looking, could use updating. I actually love the flavor of the dogs very much.

Casing was a little tough but my grandson did a Coney challenge and we both agreed the flavor of Lafayette dogs was better but we wished the casing wasn't so tough.

ok, it is pretty good! Was not sure what to expect with "Coney Island" in the name, but it was recommended as one of the goto Detroit food stops. The hot dog has all the characteristics of a good new york hot dog: snappy casing, mustard, onions, if you choose, and the bun.

The difference is the chili. Not the chili I am used to, but it is more like ground beef with mild chili spices, so not greasy at all. The people running the place look to be the original founders Heard them asking the customers ahead of me if they enjoyed the food, I think they care that the people enjoy their food.

It shows in the taste of the food. Perfect end to our trip home to Detroit! Nothing beats a GREAT coney dog! We had fantastic and quick service- we were treated like old customers as soon as we we walked in - if felt like being home again! We missed this being down south!! Stopped by here while heading back to the hotel.

You are able to sit down wherever you want, and someone will come serve you and take your order. Food comes out pretty quick, and is a good bite. I ordered the Lafayette Special with chilli Cheese Fries and let me tell you this and my wife got the Coney and fries I've waited years to come back to Detroit specifically to come here.

It was EXACTLY how I imagined. The snap of the dog, the deliciousness of the chili with the onions and mustard. The hot crispy fries smothered in cheese, chilli and onions My son was recently born in Detroit and I can't wait til he's old enough to experience what we experienced. The Lafayette special is well worth it.

The buns are soft, the dogs just pops when you bite it, and then the chili, onion, mustard are just classic mixes on all coney dogs. But it was full of suit and ties people during the early afternoon and reminds me of Wall Street.

What a great experience this was! The hot dogs were great as well! Loaded with fresh goodness! Will definitely be a top item again on our next trip! Another Detroit staple, the Coney Dog. We tried the famous Lafayette. The chili was unique and the dog had a great snap and flavor.

A good chili dog always soaks up the nights beverages Definitely has a Classic Detroit feel. We had the Lafayette specials. The Coneys were definitely fully loaded. It was a pretty good hot dog. The wiener was tougher than normal to bite through. And the Bathroom was in an uncomfortable tight staircase downward.

Nostalgia at its finest! Love everything about walking into Lafayette knowing I will soon be eating the best coneys. From the hustle and bustle sounds and views of the city, to the snap of the coney dog- nothing not to fall in love with.

Service is always fantastic. The taste… oh the taste. THE BEST. I got the Lafayette special and it was very good. The staff are friendly and the food is quick. They are definitely a local gem. Had a Lafayette Special and Chili Cheese Fries add Shredded Cheddar. Neither were particularly amazing, but were good enough I would visit again on occasion.

Can't beat the price. Dig in and eat up. Make a trip down to the restroom, you won't regret it. They have delicious Detroit style coneys. The coney sauce has great flavor and the dogs were tasty. Small place so you might have to wait when it's busy.

The service was very fast even when it was packed. It's a really enjoyable Coney Dog and part of the Detroit experience, but it still is just a chili dog. I liked seeing the pictures of the Red Wings and the Stanley Cup at Lafayette Coney Island.

Need a place to stay? Where City name. Rooms, guests. Rooms and guests. Search for hotels. Middle Eastern restaurant. Beer hall. Show 3 more. Bucharest Grill is a popular eatery that combines Middle Eastern and American cuisine.

They offer a variety of dishes, including shawarma, sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs. Their signature sandwich is made with spiced beef and chicken or a vegetarian option served on pita bread with vegetables and garlic. Alongside their famous shawarmas, Bucharest Grill also serves stuffed peppers and gourmet hot dogs.

Pizza restaurant. Supino Pizzeria is a bustling establishment known for its thin-crust pizza and unique toppings such as egg and turkey. Although it may not offer Detroit-style pizza, it is widely regarded as one of the top pizzerias in both Detroit and the entire country.

With an extensive wine menu available, Supino Pizzeria also caters to those looking for drinks with their meal. I've visited this pizzeria twice - once for slices and once for an 18" pie - and both times the wait was short despite the lines. The pizzas here are thin, tasty, and satisfying.

They also have a variety of special pizzas on the menu. The location is convenient, just a short walk from Eastern Market, and there is both street parking and a nearby lot. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating options, or you can opt to take your food to go.

Overall, this is a great place for a quick, delicious bite and I will definitely be returning. I always get the supino pizza because everything about it is perfection but the last 3 times were disappointing.

The garlic was small and sparse, not much olives either and the bottom was a tad too burnt. I still ate it because the taste is there but overall I expected better.

Went here after the Tigers game for a quick snack as we were still pretty full from lunch. The special was a white pizza with turnip and banana peppers and spinach?

And my husband just got pepperoni. And decent flavours but not a very substantial pizza. If you like a thin crust pizza, this is definitely a good choice. Some of the best pizza I've ever had anywhere. The addition of chevre in the cheese blend is unique and SO tasty. The service is absolutely fantastic too!

Our server was Britney and despite the restaurant being super busy she was very on top of things and went the extra mile to run us down with the leftovers I forgot at our table! Will definitely be back many many more times. Nothing better than a quick pizza slice!

This spot can't be beat located right in eastern market. After you finish your groceries, grab a slice to-go! Pros: affordable, the crust was fantastic almost as good as the slices I've had in NYC , the cheese tasted great, workers were efficient Cons: the sauce was barely there and a little sweet for me.

Of one the best pizza I ate in my life! Thin, slightly crunchy, fresh ingredients. Ordered a small San Gennaro, perfect for one with a Peroni, draught one for once! Ate at the bar, great place to have a nice chat with the barman! Literally my all time favorite pizza spot! No one compares to supinos!

I've brought so many loved ones, family and friends here, and they are always blown away at the food, kind and energetic service, and OFCOURSE the atmosphere!

Loved it before the renovation, and love it after! The pizza is fresh not the oh yeah it's fresh I mean it's authentic, flavorful, crust is perfect, many options to choose from. IF YOU GO HERE YOU NEED TO TRY THE CANOLI! if you don't Lines are always out the door so expect a wait.

I had a bad experience here today. I ordered a small city wing pizza and it took so much longer than anticipated. When I got there was no line or anything but during my wait it got significantly busier.

They gave me the wrong pizza at first and I realized when as soon as I stepped outside. I came back and the counter girl litterally just threw out that mistake pizza. I understand they probably have rules on that but they could have given me that mistake pizza for the inconvenience while I wait for the one I ordered.

Seems like a BIG waste of food. They have never disappointed and would recommend it to anyone in the area. My favorite is the Supino Pizza. Found this from an old DDD episode.

Definitely lived up to our expectations! The pizza was so good, I really can't remember having better. Ordered three slices of pepperoni and three of the special.

Saved a couple pieces for after our concert, just as good on the way home! If you're in Detroit, this is a must stop. Great spot for legit pizza. You can tell the ingredients are really fresh and they take a lot of pride in their pie. Staff was cool and place was really comfortable and nicely designed.

Convenient to the market and downtown. Highly recommend. Slide 1 of 3. American Coney Island is a steadfast eatery that offers a concise selection of traditional Coney Island-style steamed bun hot dogs and fries.

In Detroit, trying one of their iconic Coney dogs is seen as an important milestone, with American Coney Island and its rival Lafayette situated side by side in friendly competition. This legendary rivalry between the two establishments has deep roots dating back to the early s and continues to thrive today.

Excellent food and service! Exactly what you expect from one of the best Coney Islands anywhere. Trust me when I say, you will certainly have a great Coney at American Coney Island. I have never had a bad experience with them. Sure, sometimes parking may not be available curbside directly in front of them.

You won't have to park any real distance from them, parking is available extremely close by. Visit America Coney Island and enjoy an exceptional Coney! The chili fries are great too Good sauce, snappy hot dog.

I wish I had hot dogs like that to take back to Ohio with me. I like Cincinnati style chili better Detroit is good too though but that hot dog was great. Very friendly woman at the counter too.

Stopped by here on the way back to the hotel. A pretty neat spot right in the corner of the road intersection. You sit down at whichever table you want. Someone comes and takes your order, and it comes out pretty quickly. The food is hot, and it tastes pretty good as well.

A spot to check out for sure with how long it has been around. Great dogs. Did carry out and tried dogs from American Coney Very clean and nicely decorated Tasty love the natural casings Also coney chalenged the place next door with my grandson.

They are both so different. Reasonable price, good location, perfect place for tourist but taste is decent. Not great especially the sausage. But I highly recommend to anyone. I just can't come to downtown Detroit without stopping to American Coney Island.

This place is an absolute Icon in Detroit and there is just something I love about their hotdogs and the overall environment. Thank you all for your hard work in making every visit special.

Iconic place with good dogs, the chili is flavorful and the fries were cooked just right. Staff were friendly and quick. Place was clean and the prices were fine. The Atmosphere and service provided is amazing.

The location is historic and has lots of photos of its past patrons, and workers. The place is a Detroit staple, and must go if you're in the area. The servers are extremely friendly, and make the experience. Detroit is an amazing city with deep rooted culture, and history.

The food is simple, but nothing beats a Coney Dog. I will definitely be back. American Coney Island has my favourite chili!!

So good!! Everything they have tastes great, but especially the chili! Dogs and fries are good. Very busy day of Tigers game. Ambiance is awesome. Friendly employees and customers. Will eat here again. It was my first time here. I really liked this place, the set up, people, deco.

I enjoyed the coney dog and fries. I am, however, a baby, and it was a weee bit too spicy. I highly recommend this place! Very cool place. The coneys were good but the sauce lacked a ton of flavor. Would still come back tho. Fries were tasty and the service was quick.

Their hot dog was essentially inedible. We went with four people and all agreed that it was horrendous. Brunch restaurant. Honest John's is a laid-back eatery in Detroit that offers breakfast all day and classic American dishes in a cozy setting adorned with a jukebox.

The popular hangover remedy, the Honest Johns breakfast sandwich, features egg, pork sausage, and American cheese on an oversized English muffin.

This restaurant stands out for its ability to serve exceptional breakfasts alongside their quality brunch options like the Monte Cristo and chicken waffles. Parking is plentiful and the place was packed. The service, food and crowd was great. I had eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. Oh and YES …. Bloody Mary… several!

I had a great first experience here. The waitress was positive and professional. The atmosphere was lively. The food was delicious.

Try the funnel cake fries. The waffle was cooked perfectly, presented with a dusting of powdered sugar. I tried the waffle by itself and decided to only drizzle syrup on because the waffle was so moist.

You can order chicken tenders or wing dings not whole wings. I ventured out and drizzled the hot honey on my waffle as well. All of the staff that I encountered was very personable. The decor is appealing and simple, not cluttered.

We went here because they were one of the only places open late night down town Detroit. The food was good. I had a Ruben. The home made pastrami was delicious, my friend had a BLT and said it was good also. I tried it, it was just to over cooked Otherwise it was flavorful.

The atmosphere could use a little lifting. Really fun and creative decor, even the bathroom was decorated with originality. Our waitress was so sweet and welcoming.

Phenomenal late night menu! They have one of the best fried chicken pitas around. Shredded lettuce, crispy or chicken, gooey melted cheese, and delicious ranch. Maybe I was a few drinks in before ordering this but it was delish. The chicken and waffles is a classic as well. Crispy hot chicken and a buttery golden delicious waffle.

They have good mixed drinks, beer on tap, and a friendly staff. Def worth a visit anytime of the day or night. Went for a quick breakfast.

Not disappointed at all. I've been here in the afternoon too. Great drink menu. The hash browns were delicious like tater tots and the veggie Scramble was really good. Attentive, friendly service. Had a nice visit. Food was hot and fresh. I wish they had homemade ranch tho! The decorations and vibe are immaculate, plus our server was so sweet and friendly!

We will definitely be back. Their brunch menu was a great variety of choices between lunch and breakfast. We got everything from traditional breakfast and Reubens. The waitress recommended The Eastsider Reuben- and so would I. The chili and the burritos were equally good.

They thankfully keep the lighting low on a Saturday morning to help with a good late Friday night lol. Here on Thanksgiving morning. So many families, so fun. Definately a parade, football, turkey trot kinda vibe. Food is yummy as always. Had Breckenridge Christmas Ale on tap. A couple of stouts would have been nice.

Food was delicious! Had the chicken wings and fries. The bartender was very kind and attentive! Love this spot!

Will be coming back. And the prices of drinks were affordable. The layout and decor was fun as well. I like the vibe. Lightning fast service, fun quirky decor and ambiance, and the food was delicious!

Plenty of clearly labeled vegan options, with way more variety than I expected from a breakfast place. This place rocks! Stopped by for brunch yesterday as we heard they had some solid vegan options.

The atmosphere is fun, with lots of neon signs, and Catfish was playing on the tv. I ordered the vegan scramble, and my husband had the vegan breakfast sandwhich and grits, everything was delicious and very filling.

Our waitress was really nice and attentive too. Definitely recommend stopping by if you're looking for a plant based brunch spot! Mexican restaurant. Latin American restaurant. Taqueria El Rey is a cash-only establishment known for its grilled chicken, tacos, and imported beer.

This Mexicantown mainstay offers a variety of tasty tacos loaded with mildly spiced meats like al pastor, carne asada, carnitas crispy fried pork , chorizo, tripe, cabeza steamed beef head , and lengua beef tongue.

Slide 1 of 9. I love this place! The tacos are so fresh and authentic. Every time I go, I get a margarita, tacos and the half BBQ chicken which comes with rice and beans.

While Union Market started as Centre Market, once the largest market in Washington, DC, and opened to the public in By , it was the center of a vibrant commercial life in Washington, D.

Close to a railroad station and streetcar lines, sitting between the White House and the Capitol Building, the market was a crossroads for all of Washington, D. After years of success, it was torn down in to make way for the National Archives. Undaunted, many of the businesses relocated and created a new venue, Union Terminal Market.

This market also does a ton of events, has a rooftop , and does drive-in Friday night movies. Check out their website for more details on special events! My favorite ramen spot in DC by far is Daikaya.

Daikaya serves Sapporo-style ramen, easily recognized by its rich pork base, seasoned with clear broths, curly noodles, and wok-roasted toppings.

Sapporo-style ramen has the most variations among Japan's three most well-known types of ramen, both in terms of ingredients and taste. T aikaya's noodles are imported directly from Sapporo and made by Nishiyama Seimen Company to ensure authenticity.

They are located in Chinatown in downtown DC making it easy to stop in after a long day. They do not take reservations, and lines can be long, so I recommend going early to get a spot in line.

They're almost always busy. Looking for a good taco around DC? My favorite spot is Taqueria Habanero. There's a location in Columbia Heights as well as College Park. Plus, President Biden and VP Kamala Harris visited in spring , which brought even more buzz to the restaurant.
