The important part is to hold the piece in its intended shape until it cools down. I use a book to weigh the scales down while they cool, but you might need to have another person help you with the main piece. The foam pieces are "sealed" when they take on a smooth, shiny look instead of the more textured matte look of the original foam.

There are markings on the pattern indicating where I put my scales, but you can play around with how you want yours positioned. Hot glue works well to glue the pieces on initially, then I use superglue to glue down the tips of the scales since I don't want a bunch of hot glue strings trailing off there.

I placed the grommet bases along the intended channel and pressed them into the foam once they were spaced evenly so that I would know where to pound them in. There should be directions on the grommet setting kit explaining how to hammer them together, but I would recommend practicing on some scrap pieces of foam first.

You could use a piece of black leather, ribbon, or really any long thin piece of material, but I opted for black elastic beading cord. With elastic lacing, it makes it possible to pull the bracer on and off without relacing the entire thing each time or having to tighten and loosen it. In order to get it to keep a rounded shape, you have to heat it.

I personally love my heat gun, but you can also use a stove top burner, a hair dryer on high heat, or you can iron the foam. A little side note, you can also iron the foam to seal the surface without coating it in glue! As long as the foam is hot, you can shape it into rounded or curved shapes.

And you can use just about anything for shaping a rounded or curved surface - a glass bottle, a bowl, a ball of some sort, a snow globe, a wig head, a duct tape dummy this is the best for shaping armor! Make sure you leave it on the form or in the shape you want until the foam cools completely, or it won't hold the shape.

You may even have to do this several times in order to get your perfect shape. Once you've shaped your foam, you need to reinforce it, or it will be flimsy.

One coat of glue and a layer of fabric on the back of your prop will be enough to set the shape. The bigger the surface area of the foam, the more layers of glue and fabric you will need to keep a rigid shape. In any event, just remember to be creative! You can make the most extraordinary things using the most ordinary materials shameless plug for found items!

However, I have made some nice little discoveries on my own, as every person will, while using this tutorial. I followed Penwiper's craft foam armor tutorial pretty much to a tee.

The heat gun works wonders. Plus, it's all very lightweight and sturdy to boot, which makes it even better to wear! I formed my armor to my body using a body dummy that I cheaply made of duct tape - see this tutorial: Clone Yourself a Fitting Assistant.

For the fabric backing on my Eirika armor, I used 2 layers of muslin to get a more rigid form and lots of Tacky glue to coat the inside. Now is a good time to try on the armor and make any adjustments necessary.

Just taping it on works fine for this test. Once you've got the armor to the shape you want it, it's time to do your 'etching'. This is done by going over the lines of the etching designs with a ball-point pen, pressing hard. Do this two or three times until the design is deeply engraved in the foam.

The ball-point works well because it rolls along the foam instead of sticking and tearing the foam. You want to make the designs as deeply impressed in the foam as you can without tearing or cutting the foam.

For finer, sharper lines, use a tool such as the point of a seam ripper and actually cut into the foam thanks, Julia, for this tip! Now you need to stiffen, strengthen, and support the armor by adding a fabric backing. I like to use cotton crinkle gauze because it's lightweight, cheap, and easy to work around curves and corners.

Cut a piece of fabric that is plenty large enough to cover your piece of armor - leave it oversized, don't trim it to the shape of your armor yet. Smooth the fabric over the glue, working it into any curves or corners and making sure it's stuck down up to the very edges of the piece of armor.

Let dry. Once the glue has dried, trim the excess fabric away with your scissors so that the edge of the fabric is flush with the edge of the foam. Give the fabric another coat of glue, making sure all edges are stuck down well.

For long, thin pieces such as the hip armor that are more inclined to be floppy, I recommend repeating these steps to give it a second fabric backing for more support. Next comes the really 'arty' step - doing your raised designs.

Squirt-tube fabric paint is perfect for this. Make sure that you get three-dimensional fabric paint, not the sort that dries flat.

I used fabric paint in metallic gold because it's always sensible to use your desired final color when possible. It's a good idea to practice a little with the fabric paint before using it on your armor.

The crispest results will be obtained by using thin lines - if you thin line isn't 'tall' enough, do two thin lines on top of each other. Try to keep the pressure even to avoid bumpiness. If you mess up, just wipe the paint off with a damp cloth before it dries and try again. When you're happy with your paint job, let it dry overnight.

Now you need to seal the foam. This is the most boring step, but it's very important to the final appearance of your armor. Craft foam is basically a sponge, which means that unless it is sealed it will soak up as much paint as you can put on it.

Sealing it prevents this, and gives a nice smooth finish for your final paint job. I've found that what works well to seal the foam is a mixture of one part Sobo glue, one part flexible fabric glue, and two parts water.

This gives you a nice smooth coat that retains good flexiblity. If you can't find Sobo, just use white school glue - it'll be almost as flexible. The water thins the glue down enough that it will not retain brush strokes. Paint it onto the foam in thin coats - you don't want it to make puddles.

Let the armor dry between coats. Keep giving it coats until you have a nice smooth finish. You may notice little air holes that seem to 'pop' through the glue as your paint - you want to keep coating it until all these are filled in, then one or two more coats on top of that.

This usually takes 7 or 8 coats, so I recommend doing one coat a day for a week or so - don't skimp on the number of coats or you'll regret it.

Sometimes it may be best to first adhere the pieces to another larger piece of foam and then peel and stick the larger piece to the background you find. You can use inks that are used for more traditional stamps like in the color box inks above.

I love the color box inks and you can get them in the longer box with the small rectangular inks or the round container with larger triangular inks. Each color can be removed and dabbed on. The fact that they are smaller and removable allows you to use more than one color for each stamp.

You can also use markers that are specific for stamping. This transfer did not come out so well but, I wanted to show it to you anyway since it could be that my markers are old and its a convenient way to get the ink onto the stamps, so you may want to try it anyway.

Acrylic paint is another way to ink the stamps. Here I am using a brayer to roll the stamp in the paint on a styrofoam plage and then rolling the brayer onto the stamp. This gives the stamps an even coat. To roll paint you can use a piece of plexiglass, wax paper or any other flat object that won't resist the paint.

Above I have a large piece of craft foam which is not peel and stick as its not necessary to stick this onto to anything to get good use out of it I scratched patterns into it with a pen you can use a skewer as well , rolled a brayer with paint over it its too big to use with ink and stamped it onto a paper.

Another way to use these foam stamps is to cut them out into shapes you like, scratch marks into them and print. In the image above with the red flower you can see that the flower on the left printed better. That is because I first printed the one on the right, saw that it did not print so well so I went back to the flower and I etched in deeper.

What happens when you don't etch deep enough is that the paint gets stuck into the grooves and you can't see the marks when printed. The marks you etch should print as white and if there is paint inside them then they will not show up.

This activity gives a very pretty looking result but, admittedly it is only for the very patient. I did this activity thinking that I would do more than one flower but, it was too tedious for me. I had a flower template which I outlined onto the background of an old journal page that I didn't like then cut up pieces of the peel and stick foam and pieced them into the flower I drew.

The stem was a free form stem. So you can look at my pictures and draw your pieces out on posterboard. Templates are right here. Let's take a look at one of the pieces.

This is the back piece and this is how to draw it up. Lay the posterboard horizontal like you see. Then draw a line right down the center from top to bottom. Now, off this center line you create a grid.

Each rectangle in the grid is three inches wide and four inches tall. My grid is in red so you can see it. Once you have this grid you can use my picture to draw out your armor piece. Look at the picture of my armor piece and see how the lines are in relation to the grid.

And draw it out the same way on your grid. The chest piece is effectively broken down into small rectangles. You can easily copy these rectangles onto your poster board. Repeat this process for the front piece of the armor, whether it be the men's or the women's. Those grid pics are here.
