I went to the site and proceeded to sign up. I filled out the first page of the form where they asked for my name and email address.

They just sell your info to other companies and maybe send you a free sample or two. At the same time, one of our readers, Tracy, who had commented a while back about the site, joined the site and came back to share her experience. And her experience is basically aligned with my thoughts.

com is a real legit product testing company. If anyone has used the site and is getting actual real products, please let me know and I will reconsider giving it a try, but until then I suggest you stay away from this site. There were many more companies and websites on the list when we originally published it.

However, a few of them no longer exist, either because they have merged with other programs or just have ended it. I am leaving them below for archival reasons.

Update : AllYou is now a part of the Southern Living magazine. This program has ended, but there is a similar program from the Southern Living magazine that I mentioned above. By joining their community you will have the chance to test new products for free, participate in surveys, and even appear in AllYou magazine or their website AllYou.

You will have the opportunity to not only get totally free stuff, but also influence the look, taste, and experience of General Mills and Small Planet Foods products.

Update : Last time I checked, their product testing page just redirected to another page. If you like Snuggle products you will like The Bear Den panel.

Membership is free and gives you access to product testing opportunities, special offers, announcements, and so on. As you can see there are a lot of companies that send you products to test and keep for free.

Some even pay you for participating. I hope you find this list helpful. Please feel free to leave a comment below if you know of any other legit company that does offer product testing items for free.

Get points instantly! Katia, thanks for the heads up. They updated their site and in the process have changed some of their pages and their URLs. I found the correct page and have updated the link. They would send a package of a variety of items that you tested and kept along with a 4 page survey to fill out and mail back.

I would stay away from them. Also, I see what I assume is an ad for Swagbucks on this site. Is this an ad or is it one of your legit sites? I just signed up with them to test things out. product testing usa swnr me a tfal opti grill that is the only thing i have bewn able to testfor them they randomly select 1 tester for each item.

its like a 1 out of a million chance u get something i was lucky. Say you signed up fully product testing usa to try dp u think I would have any consequences.

This is the first time i try anything like this so i really dont know. Hi,I tried ProductTestingUSA. I got a Mamaroo Bouncer from them for free! All I had to was review it! I am guessing that Ashley is a fake person. It is really the scammer searching for their website and commenting that it is safe to trick other people.

Product testing USA is legit I have tested one item for them but it seems like nobody gets chosen more than once but you have to sign up separately for each product and your chances of getting chosen probably are one in a million, and unfortunately each time you sign up for a product you have to do the crappy survey and yes if you select yes on anything you are swamped with a bunch of junk mail.

Google loreal consumer testing and they will mail you products to test out. So amazing. Good luck and have fun! Andre, where do you see Dhgate gives away free stuff? I got one yesterday actually. Snuggle has one as well. Similar to Smiley Crowdtap is awesome too. I got some Masterpiece grilling seasoning, probably 10 items at once.

I have been quite a bit from crowdtap lately I am going to be getting some shampoo and conditioners and hair color here soon. crowdtap is great i won almost bucks in gift cards total over 2 months, the person above what they mean is when it comes to food stuff, they send a whole box of goodies like hidden valley ranch had one through them and you got a huge bottle of ranch, dipping bowls, packets, coupons.

stuff like that. does anyone know if product-testing. com is legit? i cant find any reviews on them, only the one for the UK. As for product-testing. What do I need to do? Keep in mind that when they do these product testing runs, they are looking for specifics demographic basically their main consumers , so based on the info you provided, you may not be a good fit for any of their tests so far.

com is not a legit site from what ive heard. you have to answer a bunch of yes or no survey questions and sign up or it signs you up for different stuff.

Scott, I am not sure about Product Testing USA. So, if you are looking for real product testing, stick with the sites mentioned in this post, or other legit companies. Hope that helps. I also did the surveys for offer bucks.

I emailed them twice and never got a response. I signed up for product testing usa and it say I was gonna be able to test out the product I signed up for and two days later it asked for payment of the product.

Yea I agree about product testing usa. Bzzagent does not pay you. Not sure where you got your information, but it is product testing plain and simple. I myself have done several campaigns for them, so I can speak from experience.

Also, you can check their website. But with some products, they will send you a survey after a few weeks of you using the product, and if you answer those surveys, you will get paid a small amount. BzzAgent has never paid me anything for taking the follow up survey, and I have been reviewing for them for a few years now.

A lot of times it could be simple mix-ups or an employee making a mistake. I would contact them and find out whats going on before taking any more surveys.

You dont want to be wasting your time for nothing. You absolutely do not get paid through bzz agent. Pretty much everything is free, though!

That was on top of getting the product. So maybe they changed somethings now. They never have. I think you might be confusing them with another company. BzzAgent will award MyPoints for surveys and some activities, however.

Kelly, the reason they do that is so they can assess the shoes to see how it holds out with all the wear and tear. That said, I have heard of some cases where you do get to keep the shoes.

I applied to Nike but have not heard back. How long does it take? Also for New Balance and Reebok. Tracy, there is no telling when they will get back to you.

I would wait a few weeks and then try to contact them. Good luck. The ones I currently am using are Influenster, PinchMe, Smiley, Crowdtap, and BzzAgent. I am a member of House Party, Mom Ambassador, and VocalPoint. com gives you free and reduced priced items almost every day through amazon.

com as long as you agree to review them. If you fail to submit your review within a certain amount of time you wont be able to recieve any more products. I have gotten everything from cookware to beauty products all full size complete products in exchange for my reviews.

Thanks for your comment, Elizabeth. I am actually working on creating a list of sites that give you free or discounted Amazon products in exchange for reviews.

I have been product testing, reviewing and sampling for years. It is a fun part time hobby I have yet to make any money from any of the product testing I have done.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Amanda. After all, a penny saved is a penny earned. can u give me some sites that are ok to work with?

I have never done this I am 77 and would like to try without getting scammed can u email me at removed by editor. Barbara, I removed your email address. Putting your email in an open website is the fastest and easiest way to get scammed.

Alright, food lovers! Enter the modern marvel: Home Meal Delivery Kits! Most services offer flexible subscription models.

You can usually choose how many meals you want to be delivered each week and for how many people. One of the coolest things about these kits is the variety. Many companies rotate their menus regularly, offering a mix of classic favorites and global dishes that might be new to you.

Some companies even offer breakfast, dessert, and snack options. The cost per meal can be higher than if you sourced the ingredients yourself. Also, while companies are making efforts to reduce packaging, there can still be a fair amount in each box, which could be a concern for the eco-conscious among us.

Before we even thought of tasting anything the fun part! From popular blogs to user reviews on various platforms—think Trustpilot, Yelp, and even Reddit—we dug deep to understand what customers truly want. We prioritized services that offered a range of options.

Once we had our list, it was time for our favorite part: taste-testing! We sampled dishes from numerous services, rating them on flavor, freshness, portion sizes, and overall satisfaction. Yes, it was as delicious as it sounds! We analyzed the cost per meal, looking for services that provided value for money without compromising on taste.

An overlooked but super crucial aspect! And of course, we made some cheeky calls to their customer service to see how responsive and helpful they were. We favored services that used eco-friendly packaging, had recycling options, or showcased any efforts towards sustainability.

Armed with all this data, our team sat down for some serious discussions and maybe a food coma or two! We debated, discussed, and sometimes even passionately argued to whittle down our choices to the final list.

Gone are the days when ordering food was a rare treat. With the advent of meal delivery services, a plethora of culinary delights are just a click away. Imagine getting gourmet dishes or even simple home-cooked style meals delivered right at your door, without the hassle of grocery shopping or meal prepping.

But with the vast sea of options available, how does one pick the right service? Enter meal delivery services! They cater to a range of preferences, from health-focused meals to indulgent treats.

Before you get overwhelmed with options, take a moment. Think about what you really need. Are you aiming to lose weight? Maybe you need high-protein meals.

Or are you a gourmet at heart, seeking new and exotic flavors? Pinning down your priorities can narrow the field significantly. From those avoiding gluten to vegans, and from keto enthusiasts to pescatarians, the spectrum is vast. Check if your prospective vegan meal delivery service can cater to your specific dietary needs.

We all dream of eating like royalty, but the wallet does have its limits. While exploring, keep an eye on the price tag. Some services might seem affordable at first but can rack up costs with add-ons. Find one that offers the best bang for your buck. Look into how your chosen service packages its food.

Do they use excessive plastic? Or have they adopted eco-friendly alternatives? Your choices can make a difference. Food can be an adventure. While local delicacies are comforting, sometimes the soul craves exotic flavors.

Scour through reviews. Consistent complaints about a particular issue should raise eyebrows. If multiple customers talk about tardy deliveries or poor food quality, take note.

But for those who find solace in cooking, meal kits can be therapeutic. We live in the digital age. A smooth app experience is almost as essential as the food itself. An intuitive interface, easy customization options, and swift checkouts can make all the difference.

If a service offers trial packs or promotional discounts, jump on it! Maybe you decide to go on an impromptu vacation or want to switch services. Having flexible return and cancellation policies can be a relief. At first glance, ordering a meal from a delivery service might seem pricier than whipping up something with ingredients from your local grocery store.

For those who value their time, enjoy variety in their meals, and dislike the hassles of grocery shopping, meal delivery services might indeed be a cost-effective option. Hey there, fellow food enthusiast! But how do we separate the sizzle from the steak? Ah, the transformation! Remember when food delivery was just a cheesy pizza or some crispy spring rolls?

Well, the culinary world has undergone a revolution, and now, gourmet meals are just a click away. What once was a domain dominated by a few select fast-food joints has exploded into a myriad of options. Our doorsteps have transformed into landing pads for dishes from every corner of the world.

As our schedules become chaotic and our world increasingly digital, the desire for tangible, real-world pleasures like good whole food arrives fresh out has skyrocketed.

No more! These plans are your ticket to more leisure. Think about it: hours previously spent on grocery shopping, prepping, cooking, and the worst part—cleaning up—are now all yours. Maybe take up painting or perhaps finally start that book you always wanted to read.

Most of these plans have menus curated with the help of nutritionists. Think of the myriad of choices at your fingertips, each designed to tantalize and satisfy in unique ways. Can you imagine diving into the heart of Italy with a rich, creamy risotto one evening, and by the next, venturing into the vibrant streets of Thailand with a tangy pad thai?

And the best part? Ever felt the weight of dietary restrictions pulling down your gourmet dreams? Those days are behind you. Think hearty chickpea stews, sumptuous vegetable curries, or maybe a tofu stir fry that bursts with flavors. Savor dishes like almond flour pizzas, zucchini pasta, or maybe a succulent steak with roasted veggies.

No more sifting through ingredient lists or fretting about cross-contamination. From fluffy gluten-free pancakes to nut-free desserts, the options are both safe and scrumptious. For those watching their caloric intake, fear not! Enjoy robust dishes, artfully portioned, and crafted to keep you both fit and fulfilled.

Often, these prepared meals might end up being pricier than if you were to source the ingredients and cook them up yourself. Packaging woes! Meal deliveries mean more boxes, plastic wraps, containers, and ice packs.

Although many companies are becoming more eco-conscious, the overall waste generated is a concern. Relying too much on these plans can take away the joy and skill of cooking.

Homemade meals, despite the effort, have a warmth and personal touch to them. While they offer a variety of dishes, customization can sometimes be limited.

Want a tad more spice or perhaps a bit less salt? Are you a big eater or perhaps someone who prefers smaller meals? The one-size-fits-all approach might not always cater to individual appetites. You might often find yourself too full or perhaps still peckish. After the initial honeymoon phase, you might notice certain patterns or repetitions in the menu.

Reflect upon your lifestyle. Are you a freelancer juggling multiple gigs? A parent managing work and kids? Or someone who genuinely enjoys the art of cooking? Your daily routine plays a significant role in determining if these meal plans align with your life.

Can your budget comfortably accommodate these meal plans? Are you on a specific diet or have certain health goals? Delve deep into the menu options available and see if they align with your nutritional requirements.

Is this a fleeting fascination or a long-term commitment? Do you see yourself enjoying delivered meals consistently over months or even years? Sustainability and satisfaction go hand in hand.

On a budget? The best cheap eats in America prove that you don't need to spend much to eat well. Dining out can be expensive, and it's not getting any cheaper. Menu prices have been rising more quickly than inflation for several years now, especially at fast-casual and fast-food spots.

So finding an interesting, intriguing, delicious cheap eat that truly hits the spot can be a real challenge. Affordable ethnic street food

Affordable ethnic street food

These detailed gluten free cards were created to help prevent that from happening and make eating out fun and enjoyable when traveling. Now it's your turn. Which street food quests have led you on an adventure? My favorite places for street food experiences have been Thailand and Turkey.

I love the ability to let go of food preconceptions and just enjoy whatever the culture throws at you. Laura, really like the idea that the food finds you in certain places.

So true. And I think that when using food as your guide it opens up so many other opportunities for learning and to meet people.

What a comprehensive list!! This is really interesting—I somehow missed the Bunny Chow in South Africa can you find it in Joburg or Cape Town? and I LOVE pupusas, so would always eat more of those.

Heather, although Bunny Chow is a typical Durban dish, it might be possible to find it in other parts of South Africa if you know what to look for. And yes, pupusas are pretty wonderful.

Found myself missing them as I put this piece together 🙂. Street food is the way to go.. Rick, it was difficult to just feature one dish from each country. We did enjoy some yummy choripan — not only in Argentina, but also in neighboring countries as well.

It is funny how food memories can make one salivate years and year later. to this day, my favorite meals were cevapi I had 3 or 4 years ago! What an amazing creation! I had no idea it was thick cream, I thought it was some type of cheese.

Kaymak is so rich that it does seem like some sort of whipped cheese. I have a sweet tooth and loved the chuchos in Spain. Thanks for a great list! Often we forget that sweets can also be street food 🙂.

Getting street food was one of my favorite parts of Nicaragua. Somehow gallo pinto and yucca just tastes better off the street than in a fancy restaurant.

Street food is such a big part of traveling through Central America. So before I went back I read loads of Malaysian food blogs and boy do Malaysians like to blog about food….

and pre-planned a bit more. In KL I found the most incredible beef noodle soup in an unlikely looking shack down an unpromising side street.

In Georgetown it was a hot and sour fish soup tucked away in the back of a market. All incredible. Sometimes it pays to wander, but sometimes a bit of planning can really help you get the best out of street food.

Yes, planning is important, especially in places like Malaysia where there is SO much choice, and therefore different levels of quality. Although we spent three months in Mexico we still have so much more to explore.

Adding it to the food bucket list 🙂. Wow—what a wonderfully comprehensive list of street food options around the world!

Oh, pani puri is one of my favorites, too! Glad you enjoyed this long list! You have a beautiful blog! I totally agree that street food is one of the best ways to get to know a new place. But, perhaps it will appear in the next edition of this street food series 🙂. Some of my absolute favourites here, and many more I would love to try!

What a beautiful post! I totally agree with 5, street food has definitely taught me to simplify my cooking. Watching how quickly everything was cooked up from scratch on the streets in Thailand simplified and improved my own Thai cooking by leaps and bounds 🙂.

Jenny, we had a similar experience in Thailand! We were overcooking everything before we visited and after watching how people prepared curries, noodles and other dishes on the street we realized our mistake, as well as the magic of fish sauce. So far, my favorite street food is grilled corn-on-the-cob in Sapporo, glazed with a lightly sweetened soy sauce.

Ooh, grilled corn on the cob with a slightly sweet soy sauce sounds amazing. Savory and sweet all together. If you do visit, be sure to try tiradito in addition to the regularly amazing ceviche. What a brilliant mouthwatering list of dishes.

One other country I like to add is Lebanon. There is a variety of street food on the streets of Beirut that includes meat sandwiches, pastry, fruit, corn etc. We have heard wonderful things about Lebanon, and especially Beirut, but sadly we have not yet been. Thailand is where our love affair with street food also started!

We are living in Thailand now, are slightly spoiled with the street food scene here! Great recap of dishes by country. Yes, if you are living in Thailand then you are very spoiled by the street food scene!! Enjoy it all!! That bunny chow looks very interesting never saw it in South Africa last year, I am going back this summer will have to look for it!

Bunny chow is a specialty of Durban, so if you visit the city just ask anyone around for a recommendation. The one we had was near Victoria market. Delicious stuff! Loved the the baleada in Honduras! We have fond memories of bleadas from Utila as well. Topped with some hot sauce or pickled vegetables they are perfect when you are starving and need a quick bite to eat.

Awesome post. My all time favorite street food is the kebab. Should not have read this on an empty stomach.. We love exploring the street food scenes too when we travel. Glad you got to try cha ca in Vietnam. Glad to see that the US is finally catching on to the joys of street foods with food trucks.

and noodles! and I love this post! Thank you for this comprehensive list of your favorite street foods. You definitely managed to make me hungry!

What stood out for me though was the excellent photos. The people made each place come more alive and the food made my mouth water. I felt like I got a beautiful world tour without leaving my comfortable chair. Well done! Joanne, thanks for noticing the people in the photos.

When I was selecting photos for this piece I purposely tried to include quite a few images with people so as to provide cultural context to the cuisine. Glad you enjoyed this! You missed Trinidad and Tobago — Look up Doubles, Aloo Pies, Pholourie, Bake and Shark, and Currants Rolls.

You can go to South Richmond Hill, NY for any of these to sample, but none beats actually getting it in Trinidad! Thoroughly enjoyed this column, and you made me so hungry!!! You are making me hungry and eager to travel again—although I just got back from a five-month trip myself!

Borek in Turkey is wonderful, though my mouth waters just thinking about the ubiquitous gozleme and its savory deliciousness. Acaraje in Salvador, Brazil—mmmm. Beef noodle soup, stinky tofu and so many other great dishes to try.

Yes, gozleme can be quite delicious as well with its spicy mixtures and flaky dough. Hopefully one day soon!

This is an awesome list. I work with a hungarian women and occasionally she will bring in Langos- so yummy and apparently so easy to cook on your own- especially if you have a bread cooker like her. Street food is one of my favourite things about travelling- particularly when I was in Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.

Langos is addictively good, especially when you get it freshly cooked. I love this!! Authentic is indeed the right word. I live in Thailand, which is street food heaven and one of my favorites has always been Moo ping grilled pork skewers that are best enjoyed with sticky rice. Another amazing country for street food is India.

I just love Masala corn! Fantastic collection! We do hope to visit soon and will definitely check out Marrakesh Square for street food when we do! Amazing discoveries and photos.

It must have been so difficult deciding which dishes to include! Sharing a meal forges friendships and opens doors that you may never discover otherwise.

In fact, our series, Food for Thought, focuses on just this topic: the intersection of food, culture and travel. Yes, for some countries e. So many great options! Happy to take part! Oh gosh, we were drooling. But just thinking, do you have a post on vegetarian street food?

Argggh this post has made me sooo hungry! Loved this list and now hungering for flaky delicious borek! I do note though that where I expected a mention of koshari you highlighted sugarcane juice instead for Egypt — in my books koshari wins, any time! Yes I was also expecting to see koshari listed for Egypt!

In fact, it was the first thing that popped in my head when I saw the title of this post before reading amything in it! That is a must-try in Egypt! Very simple ingredients, but it does take me some time to cook when I prepare it.

Macaroni, spaghetti, rice, lentils, chickpeas, spices, fried onions, the special tomato sauce, the special vinegar sauce, and I also make the yogurt cucumber sauce too the last part is not an Egyptian tradition with this meal, but it is for others and i love it with this meal.

Khoshari has been recommended to us quite a few times. Kak dyela! Greetings from our Moscow hotel room where the wi-fi and the water pressure is surprisingly strong. Just got back from a huge outdoor bazaar where, amidst all the trinkets, we stumbled upon some delicious lamb and pork kebabs cooked on charcoal grills, paired with toasted bread and pickled everything, that was the tastiest lunch yet.

Now your post has my mouth watering and ready to explore our dinner options. Thanks much for this encyclopedic reference manual for street food, which makes this finicky eater quite a bit more adventurous.

Maybe now I will go for the borscht. On a personal note, gotta say every time I check in with you, I am so inspired by your very real stories and exquisite photographs, to the point of tears.

The travel advice and insights into people and cultures you share is invaluable. You are amazing human beings, just wonderful ambassadors, who put the be-ing in your unique sense of humanism.

My wife and I do our best to emulate you, by being curious, respectful, and joyful. I like to think that we are trying to cultivate our appreciation of this earth and its people somewhat like the kid from Wheeler Avenue and his wife do daily.

Thank you, I mean spacibo. Keep on creating your beautiful body of work, continue to be safe, healthy, and happy. You guys are my heroes.

With much appreciation and admiration,. Frank, so great to hear from you. Your lunch sounds terrific. We are humbled beyond words. And grateful, too. As for the rest of your travels, they sound really terrific.

In Warsaw, check out the Uprising Museum. Good, down-home pirogies and beer if that sounds good to you. Finally in Barcelona, the Boqueria covered market. I remember a lunch of sautéed mushrooms and some other tapas with Audrey during our honeymoon trip years ago.

Oh, and Irati, the Basque tapas restaurant in Barcelona. Street food is awesome everywhere. I think it is the real taste of every place you visit. Absolutely, Lidia. The question for me is always: where in they way of food can I find the truest expression of the culture?

And so good to hear from you. Never had the borscht, but pea soup with sausage in Warsaw sure put a smile in my belly. Past few days here were, by design, full of beer and pierogies, the Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner of Champions while on vacation in Poland!

Just today incidentally, we toured the Uprising Museum for over 4 hours, reading, photographing, and imagining the heroism amidst the fear and unconscionable horror. The museum details a story and perspective not told in the States.

As you have reminded me through the years, be it food or history, the personal experience of indulging your very own taste buds and listening to natives, tells a truth no culinary opinion or propaganda can subvert.

Thanks for the advice on Istanbul and Barcelona, especially the specific delicacies and establishments. We hear great things about the friendliness of the Turks and the unique spices in their foods.

And then tapas and everything Gaudi in Barcelona, can you believe I may not want to go back to my beloved Scranton, where we can rightly boast of our many fine pizza joints— when I mention Buona, Granteeds, Pappas, etc.

You know how I feel about you , what you do and how you magnificently do it….. Ah, Frank, now you have me salivating 🙂 I wrote that before I even read the last sentence of your comment.

Sounds like you had a terrific trip. By the way, your focus on beer and pierogies reminds me of our latest article about a day trip to Szczecin, Poland. What a comprehensive and delicious guide. My favourite street food ever is the simple falafel we had in Syria, where they make them by the hundreds and fill a little paper sack for you to take away.

They cost about 10 cents each and are delicious. Your story of Syria is just one of the many threads of sadness of that situation.

Circumstances change. That one cannot change soon enough. I love street food! I also like the angle you put on street food and how it pushes our exploratory boundaries. An enjoyable read. Cheers and happy travels! Eat well! My goodness, this is such an amazing round-up of incredible eats.

Every single one is worthy of a trip! Thanks so much for putting together this guide. My new checklist! Thanks, Lori. Glad you enjoyed it…and especially glad that it qualifies as your new checklist. A nice endorsement! A passenger gets pleasure both physically and mentally by taking of street food rather than restaurant.

Spices, elements and recipes are mixed properly with the street food. It runs traditionally by the culture of a nation. Also this carries the food chain about any country. Now time to explore the culture of the nation by tasting of the street food. Thanks for catching this!

Yes, it is dried seaweed strips or aonori powdered seaweed that is sprinkled on takoyaki. The beans are petai, not fava beans.

I think petai is also known as stink beans. Thank you for the correction. Not sure how that bit of culinary blindness slipped through the cracks. Glad you enjoyed the post!

I was expecting tteokbokki spicy rice cake will be on the list. I was also expecting the street foods from the Philippines. That is an awesome list. Travelling and working for food, I have had the pleasure to eat about half of those. The plov, kunafeh, and manti brought a smile to my face.

Good memories. I discovered a few hours later that my dairy allergy extends to goat milk, but the mixture of tangy cheese and hyssop was delicious, and made a welcome change from weeks of shuwarma, falafel, and chummos! That might just be childhood memories, though. We had Druze food in Jordan, but not this dish you described.

What a great article — and your pictures are great!!! I just discover your blog and I love it! We travelled quite a lot and we also enjoyed the empanadas in Costa Rica, the Ceviche in Peru or the Pad Thai in Thailand. Food is such a great theme and a good reason to travel.

Ah, we love South Indian cuisine, Vikas. Some of our favorite food. This is an unbelievable list! Thank you so much for sharing. I am an avid lover of street food everywhere. This list has my mouth watering!

Glad you enjoyed this, Que. We are with you — right in front of you, fresh. Street food lovers of the world unite! This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure and privacy policy for more information. Share Tweet Pin LinkedIn. Thailand, our first street food love.

Cooling off with tereré at the Encarnacion bus station in Paraguay. It's easy to look at Abu Dhabi's magnificent five-star hotels with elaborate brunches and think that this is what you eat when visiting the United Arab Emirates capital.

But if you know where to look, you can find much of the same street food that you'll see in Beirut, Mumbai or Istanbul. Here are 10 affordable street foods to try in Abu Dhabi. Photo courtesy of Brian Cicioni. Halawet el-jibn translates to sweet cheese.

The Syrians have taken these soft-as-a-pillow cheese rolls around the world. In Abu Dhabi, you'll see a handful of options along Khalidiya Street. They're typically cut into small bites and topped with enough crushed pistachio to give them a slight crunchiness.

Unlike many of the other street snacks in this list, halawet el-jibn are just as good, if not better, the next day. Our recommendation: Al Sultan Sweet. This rich, creamy milk tea is probably the easiest item to find on our list.

Think masala chai but with fewer spices. And in this case, the dominant cinnamon and cardamom flavors are all you need. Karak tea also goes well with any of the other popular street food items you'll find in Abu Dhabi. Our recommendation: Bait Al Shay. These fried patties are crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside.

In Abu Dhabi, they're typically stuffed with ground lamb, onion and pine nuts. You can enjoy them plain, which is what we recommend if you're trying these American football-shaped meze for the first time.

They also go well with tahini or tzatziki sauce. Some places will serve them with plain yogurt. Our recommendation: Zahrat Lebnan. Knafeh is one of the most popular Middle Eastern sweets to go. A typical square slice will be about an inch thick with gooey cheese wedged between crispy shredded filo dough.

Compared to baklava, the sweetness is more subtle and it's also more delicate. At Qwaider Al Nabulsi , they serve custard and cheese versions.

Inside this small and efficient sweet shop, they have both on display just an inch above their circular stoves, which keep them warm throughout the day.

You can watch the team cut away at the latter, with the cheese clinging to the round base like what you'd see when removing a slice of Chicago deep-dish pizza from the pie.

Ask the staff, and they'll tell you they're serving Palestinian-style knafeh. These sweet and simple deep-fried dough balls are omnipresent throughout Abu Dhabi and much of the Middle East.

The outer layer of these bite-sized confections glistens from the date syrup, while the sesame seeds give them an extra crunch. We recommend eating them fresh out of the frying pan in order to really experience the crunchy outside and soft, airy center. This simple combination of olive oil and dried herbs baked into flat bread of varying thickness is a street food staple throughout the Middle East.

In Abu Dhabi, there is a particularly high concentration of options in Zone 1, along Muroor Road. We recommend enjoying yours as fresh out of the oven as possible. It also reheats well. Our recommendation: Manakish Express. This wafer-thin crepe-looking bread is made with whole wheat flour and filled with a thin layer of cheese, egg, honey or fish paste.

The result is a crispy street snack that's not as filling as the other items on our list. In Abu Dhabi, you can find dozens of takes on this flaky layered flatbread. The traditional way to enjoy parotta is with curry.

But as this is the Middle East, you can also find shish tawook and shawarma versions.

Affordable home improvement tools

Affordable home improvement tools

This isn't a first-timer's toolkit unless you're jumping straight into auto-care. However, the expansive selection of tools will help you accomplish many household tasks.

Adding a hammer would extend the range of this kit's home repair and project capabilities. The sockets, ratchets, and wrenches shine, but the rest of the kit is just okay.

The screwdrivers are comfortable in hand when dry, but their edgeless handles are difficult to hold when oily. The case is fairly good at holding tools but lacks durability. When ours arrived, there was a gouge in the bottom of the case, and one of the socket holders was slightly distorted and barely held the socket in place.

All things considered, this is an excellent option for those who want a starter kit for auto care or want to add a great set of sockets and wrenches to their tool bench. If you're rough on your tools, consider a more durable case and set like the DeWalt Piece Mechanics Tools Kit and Socket Set.

The DeWalt Piece Mechanics Tools Kit and Socket Set scores very high in our four metrics. The tool quality and functionality were immediately apparent as soon as we assembled sockets to the ratchet.

Easy-to-assemble and securely fastened are the themes of this kit. We effortlessly wrenched on ski bindings and worked on bicycles. The carrying case is lightweight, easy to carry, and has two metal latches that snap solidly into place.

And as a carpenter who has used DeWalt products for over 20 years, one of our testers can assure you that durability is second to none. On the other hand, we can't recommend this high-quality toolset for general use only because it lacks diversity in its available tools. There are no hammers, pliers, or tape measures.

However, if you either already own or don't mind acquiring those other tools separately, this might be the right toolset for you. For those in need of a more versatile general use set, we recommend checking out the Amazon Basics Piece Hand Tool Kit.

The Amazon Basics Piece Hand Tool Kit set offers a killer value and a solid selection of household tools. It comes outfitted with a small hammer, a saw, various pliers, a tape measurer, a small selection of nails and screws, and even a Torpedo level.

The small socket set is handy, the snap-off blade is adequate, and the level is convenient when hanging art. The screwdrivers and magnetic bit driver have comfortable handles with rounded edges that help maintain your grip. The driver's 20 extra Torx, Phillips, flathead, hex, and squarehead bits expand the toolkit's capabilities.

We always appreciate having SAE and metric hex keys around the house, especially if you own bikes. The construction of the pliers leaves something to be desired, as their small, slick grips make them hard to hold and the joints are not tight enough.

Unfortunately, the action on the slip joint pliers is the worst in the roundup. As for the ratchet, the gears are too far apart, so it takes more time and repetition to tighten and loosen the bolts.

We also think that the carrying case could be much more precise in its design to hold tools in place. After opening and closing the case multiple times, one pair of pliers fell right out. Drawbacks aside, this tool set has impressive value and utility.

We recommend Amazon Basics to anyone who needs a starter kit on a budget. For those who simply need quality pliers, the Channellock 5-Piece Pliers Set is the set to get. The Channellock 5-Piece Pliers Set gives every indication of maintaining the quality we have come to expect from this brand.

The large tongue and groove pliers, which a lot of us call channellocks , are the best of their kind in the test. They also have the widest size range, making them a must for gripping pipes during plumbing projects. The slip joint pliers and diagonal cutters also top the list, with the latter cutting through plastic and wire quietly and efficiently without sending shrapnel across the room.

The needle nose pliers have the narrowest tip in the lineup, making them great for tight spots and precision work. All offer smooth action with little to no play. Long handles with a vinyl sheath provide ample leverage.

This plier set is superb, but that's about all you'll get — and you're paying for it. The extra money will buy tools that work better, make your life easier, and last longer. They may save you money over time. They will save you grief.

You will have to round out the rest of your tool kit — hammer, screwdrivers, sockets, hexes, etc. If you need pliers, look no further. It's hard to imagine these failing, as each tool is top-quality.

This plier set is ideal for anyone looking to build a kit to last a lifetime. But if your projects require a multitude of various tools, the Crescent Piece Professional Tool Set offers more of what you need.

The Craftsman Piece Home Kit is a solid little tool set. If your projects aren't elaborate, this kit offers the best mix of basic tools. Its fiberglass and rubber-handled hammer is one of the better options in the test, as are its slip joint pliers.

They have an easy action and comfortable grip. The screwdrivers are pleasant to wield and work well. Instead of the magnetic bit driver that many other kits include, this one gives you a ratcheting screwdriver with a bit adapter so you can use it for bolts or slap on a Torx, Phillips, or flathead to tackle an array of screws.

We like it. The little socket set is a handy size. It's not top-of-the-line but it works well enough. The two hex key sets are standard, offering metric and SAE sizing. The sockets are only okay. The Crescent set is of higher quality. The snap-off knife isn't the most comfortable cutting device to hold.

It works, though, and snapping off a dull end to reveal a fresh edge is easy enough with the included pliers. Just bend the blade end away from the scoring mark for a clean snap. The plastic carrying case is alright, though the sockets fall out easily.

You have to remember to leave that side of the briefcase down. All told, this tool kit offers an impressive quality-to-value ratio and is a great starter tool set for less ambitious projects or those looking for quality on a budget. If you plan on using sockets frequently, the ones included in the DeWalt Piece Mechanics Tools Kit and Socket Set are high-quality and the case holds the tools well, too.

The Black and Decker 20V Max Piece kit is an easy favorite. If you've tackled any home repair projects involving screws, you know how many hours a cordless electric drill can save, so it's great to see one in a pared-down tool set along with all the essentials.

The drill comes with 10 bits, which drills pilot holes for a reasonable range of screw sizes. We also appreciate the spade and hole saw bits. You may not need to cut a big hole through solid wood often, but if you do find yourself wanting to run some wires through the back of a desk or cut a finger pull in a cabinet, they are fantastic to have around.

The drill gives you 11 torque settings to amp up the power for those higher friction tasks. We also like the pliers, the needle nose, and the slip joint.

Their handles are a little short but offer a pleasant grip and feel more solid than some. While the drill is fairly good, it's not powerful enough for heavy jobs. The battery holds out for about 25 minutes of continuous use, which is enough time to blast through a couple hundred pilot holes or a few full-hole cuts.

An extra battery is necessary for longer projects, meaning you'll need to make an additional purchase. The included battery takes more than three and a half hours to charge. Additionally, the carrying case is just a bag with no organizational pockets, leaving your tools in a pile. Drill bits aren't very durable in those circumstances.

The rest of the tools are on the fair side. Hammers with necks that narrow are easy to break, especially when prying out nails.

Although, the bit driver gives you smaller options. We aren't crazy about the grips or ergonomics of the pliers or snap-off blades, and the adjustable wrench wobbles. Still, this is a decent kit to get you going if you want to speed through your chore list with a cordless drill. If you require a better hammer and tool quality in general, the Craftsman Piece Home Kit is another option to consider that's also affordable.

We tested these tool sets head-to-head and compared them to our family favorites, like a Stanley hammer that's been around for nearly 40 years and Channellock pliers of approximately the same vintage. Our team systematically tested every tool included in each set for several weeks.

We rotated through the hammers, knocking nails in and prying them back out. Then we pulled more out with the pliers and worked on wire projects with the needle-nose options.

We tackled rusty old bolts with the wrenches and ratchets and stripped old wires with the wire strippers. We ran battery life and charging time tests on the cordless drills and compared each kit's tool selection to determine their overall quality. We removed ski bindings with ratchets and then tightened truck toppers and bicycle bolts with various wrenches.

Then we looked at toolset costs to compare value. Clark Tate led our tool testing team. Clark grew up in a farming community known for its excellent middle and high school vocational programs. After several shop classes in middle school and a summer class in aerodynamics constructing model airplanes, Clark started taking advantage of her family's extensive tool set.

She's helped build barns and fences, worked several roofing jobs, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, and recently built out a camper van. She believes that high-quality tools should last a lifetime and work for you instead of against you. Clark also recruited her father, Glen Tate, to try out all the tools to get a larger person's perspective.

They mostly agreed on preferences, though Clark liked smaller, lighter hammers better. Chances are there will be a lot of dust and debris, and this shop vac can clear it all up in minutes. That being said, you will also need a great broom and a heavy-duty dustpan.

Accept All Reject All Show Purposes. Based in Birmingham, Alabama, she is a devotee of old movies, farmers' markets and Ina Garten's tomato sandwich with basil mayo recipe. Leah has a degree in news media and English from The University of Alabama. Gather everyone together for one of these flavorful, affordable meals that rely on pantry staples to cut down on cost.

With just 30 minutes of active time in the kitchen, you can pull together a pan of creamy bean enchiladas, a protein-packed skillet pasta or even a steamy bowl of lentil soup that everyone can enjoy. Make this cheesy ground chicken pasta recipe for a busy weeknight dinner.

Serve with a simple side salad and a glass of red wine. This lentil-vegetable soup is packed with kale and tomatoes for a filling, flavorful main dish. If you have it, the Parmesan cheese rind adds nuttiness and gives the broth some body.

Sun-dried tomatoes are the star of this recipe— providing texture and umami. Combined with the spinach, they make this dish a great source of vitamins C and K.

These quick sweet potato and bean enchiladas are diabetes-friendly thanks to egg wraps that are lower in carbs than traditional tortillas. The vegetarian filling is both sweet and savory, while the topping adds texture and freshness.

This easy one-pot pasta recipe earns the title "creamy" thanks to the addition of sour cream and Parmesan, which combine to create a savory cheese sauce that clings to the orecchiette, peas and sausage.

The best part about this recipe is that it only requires one vessel to cook everything—pasta included. By using the exact amount of liquid you need to cook the pasta, the starch that usually gets drained off with your pasta water stays in the pot, adding even more creaminess.

If you like spicy but not too spicy, use a mix of sweet and hot Italian sausages. This ooey-gooey dish has baked-pasta vibes but features protein-packed beans instead of noodles. Look for dried corona beans, a larger, creamy white bean, at natural-foods stores or online.

Cannellini are a good substitute. Serve with a green salad and toasted baguette. This twist on the classic sandwich has all the sweet-and-savory flavors you crave in a sloppy Joe, but by swapping in some bulgur for half of the ground beef you cut some saturated fat and get an extra gram of fiber in each serving the whole-wheat bun and veggies add 6g more.

Serve these healthy sloppy Joes with a side of napkins—you'll need 'em! We use mirepoix—a combination of onion, celery and carrots—to flavor this soup.

Keep a store-bought bag of the mixture in your freezer to ensure you always have some on hand without worrying about it going bad. This satisfying one-pot pasta cooks with just the right amount of water so you're left with perfectly cooked noodles and enough starchy liquid to act as a sauce.

Stir in lemon juice and zest at the end for a bright finish. Avoid the time-consuming mess of tenderizing, breading, and frying with this casserole version of chicken Parmesan. It may not look like your grandma's classic version, but it still delivers "that irresistible combination of tender chicken, crunchy-cheesy coating, and flavorful sauce," says Chef John.

A savory mixture of ground beef, spices galore, egg, and bread are shaped into steaks and smothered in a rich and addictively savory gravy. I usually make enough extra sauce to pour over mashed potatoes.

With only six ingredients, these enchiladas are a breeze to make. Grab your favorite toppings—like cilantro, jalapeños, hot sauce, guacamole, or sour cream—if you want to dress it up once it comes out of the oven. These "Sneaky" Sloppy Joes earn their name from the addition of onions, bell peppers, and budget-friendly lentils into the meaty mix.

and get those veggies in without a struggle," says Andie. Five ingredients pack a serious punch of flavor in this savory tater tot casserole. Cream of chicken soup melts into the browned beef and mixed vegetables creating a rich filling, while crispy and crunchy tots take the limelight.

There's nothing quite like a ready-to-eat Reuben. This classic hot sandwich features piles of steaming thinly sliced corned beef and sauerkraut with a mixture of melted Swiss and creamy Thousand Island. This wallet-conscious and healthy one-pot meal is also kid-friendly, according to StephR "This is incredibly easy, delicious, and spicy!

Taste-test approved by a very picky 3-year-old. Encrusted with a mayo-and-potato-chip outer layer, this skillet-toasted tuna melt gets extra crunch, perfectly complementing its gooey and melty cheese center.

Minced red onions, pickles, and Dijon lend a vibrance to the tuna mixture; while, sharp Irish cheddar brings it all together. When Chef John proclaims a dish is a hit, you'd better believe it.

Who doesn't love juicy, fall-off-the bone chicken in flavorful Greek spices? This four-ingredient red curry chicken is hassle-free and inexpensive to make, especially when compared to takeout prices.

If desired, substitute white rice for the rice vermicelli noodles, or garnish with cilantro, green onions, or red chile peppers. Simmered tomatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, and spices are topped with eggs that cook sunny-side-up in this traditional Tunisian and Israeli dish.

Chicken drumsticks are the cheapest though. Life happens and sometimes we forget the simplest thing, like a toy, can ease the stress of a situation for a child. They even offer families the chance to score free Christmas toys as sometimes the season gets overlooked amid all the bills.

Use the website to take part and donate or find a participating Toy Bank near you. Visit the Toy Foundation website. Most of us have heard of Toys for Tots. The goal of Toys for Tots, a national charity soon celebrating its 75th year, is to help bring the joy of Christmas to less fortunate children.

To get involved with this awesome mission, simply visit the website for a local or national chapter and view donation opportunities. You can also apply online for your child to be a toy recipient.

Visit Toys for Tots. One way that toy companies like to get the word out about their new products is by having people host home parties.

This not only makes for a fun evening with friends, but you also get to keep the toy, and your guests may even leave with free samples. Ripple Street is probably one of the most common home party sites.

You apply to host and if you show serious interest by completing tasks, you may be selected to host.

The goodies for the party arrive via mail at your door for you and your guests to enjoy. While most parties are geared toward home goods and foods, toy parties do crop up sometimes!

They recently had one for Vtech NexTag , What Do You Meme? Family Game , and Springlings Surprise by Little Tikes. Visit Ripple Street.

Tryazon regularly offers toys and games as a part of their home party program! These tend to be lesser-known brands, but lots of fun nonetheless. Some of the parties that are open for you to apply for right now are Exploding Kittens: Good vs.

Evil Game Night Party , SmartGames Early Learning Games Party , and the Spin Master Bunches of Fun Game Night.

Past parties have included Twister Air Game Night , itCoinz Spinner to Winner Party , Exploding Kittens for Kids Game Night , and the Spin Master — 4D BUILD Party. Visit Tryazon. Here are a few more small tips for finding free toys and other freebies for your kids.

Our favorite cash-back app, Ibotta offers dozens of savings on toys and games. Be sure to check their website for the latest deals and promotions. The clearance aisle at your local store can be a gold mine for year-round deals and discounts.

What to Newborn Babies Really Need? by Mrs. MM Avoiding Ivy-League Preschool Syndrome. rjack April 20, , am. My kids are now longer kids 18 and 21 years old , but we used to play with those Box Blocks which were basically shoe box size boxes that looked like bricks. You could build forts, walls, and all kinds of stuff with those.

BobTX June 23, , am. madge April 20, , am. i totally want to live in the future he is drawing in that center one. Money Mustache April 20, , am. Frugal Toque April 20, , am. Battleship teaches graphing and a certain measure of spatial reasoning.

So does Blokus. Chess is just heavy strategy. Sad, that. El Beardo Numero Uno April 20, , am. You can try it when you visit this summer.

Jon April 20, , am. Valerie April 20, , am. I will be playing Catan tomorrow night! Friends night in — games night at my place! I will be enjoying my homemade wine, which I was inspired to start making after one of your posts on beer making!

Sheep for brick! Baughman April 20, , pm. Board games are the ultimate Mustachian hobby! Marginal cost of zero, low initial investment. Settlers of Catan was my gateway drug to the German strategy world of games.

It is pretty freaking addicting. I own 40ish German-style games. Had a buddy who owned close to a thousand, and we bought our favorites that we played. Here are some of our favorites: Typical German strategy: Alhambra, Citadels, Factory Manager, Hansa, Hollywood Blockbuster, Ingenious, Kingsburg, Manila, Medici, Modern Art, Ra, Ricochet Robots, San Juan, Settlers of Catan.

Lighter: Coloretto, Five Crowns, For Sale, Hey! My ultimate favorite game is ricochet robots you can see reviews on Amazon, board game geek, or youtube.

I love that game!!!! My wife and I played it every day for about a year. Totally addictive and it makes your brain tired. Alhambra is another classic. But Settlers is as probably as good of a place as any to start.

I really like Medici too. Heck, I like all of the games we own…they are of the best investments I own. Huck April 24, , am. com as a resource. My boys 6 and 8 love to play games and my 3 year old loves to roll my dice, hold my cards, and cause the occasional earthquake in the land of Carcassone.

The other fun toy that we all enjoy using is the GPS…we go geocaching!! The rule is you leave something and take something but our kids believe the rule is you leave several things and take one which helps us get rid of lots of the crappy plastic toys we seem to accumulate!

Yes, the GPS was a little pricey so maybe that disqualifies this activity. MooseOutFront November 22, , am. George Carlson April 20, , pm. Carcassonne is also a great tile-based board game. It is like a colorful version of dominoes with some sweet twists if you add in an expansion set or two.

Catan and Carcassonne have been my go-to games when introducing my friends to European-style board games. Heath May 31, , pm. Executioner April 21, , am. Its only drawback if there is one is that it requires at least 3 players.

My wife and I find ourselves wanting to play but always have to scrounge up one or two others — not a bad thing, but not always possible.

Just had a Catan gathering of 4 players at our place last night! Scott January 28, , pm. Try Catan with two; it might surprise you.

John Fiala January 28, , pm. John Fiala May 2, , pm. Crazyfbs April 20, , am. Landor n Stella April 20, , am. Another great post, MMM! I love the whiteboard and the pictures, what a great idea. My mom has boxes of drawings from me and my siblings, but no good way to display them, so they just clutter up her basement.

Travis April 20, , am. We have lots of toys for our kids that we paid very little for or even nothing at all. Just a matter of being creative. Andrea April 20, , am. My kids loved Play-Doh. Forget the Play-Doh play sets. Get out your own baking supplies and give those to them, instead.

Rolling pin, cookie cutters, muffin tin, plastic butter knife, bread pan, etc. It is good for a couple of hours every time!

Llama April 20, , pm. Heather April 20, , am. After a few sessions I discovered to my complete surprise, that I was good at it. My husband even comes to listen sometimes. Now my son keeps interrupting to add his plot twists to the story.

Sometimes he makes up stories for me now, or re-tells to me stories that my husband made up. It has to be good. Oh, you are lucky to discover you have storytelling built in! I discovered the opposite — even though I like writing about things that really happened, my mind goes blank when asked to come up with a fantasy story for kids.

Just get little MM to give you three things to put in the story, then start talking. Sometimes they completely disintegrate, but my audience is very forgiving. Moonwaves April 17, , am. I even bought some for myself when I decided to attempt the 3-day-novel competition last year.

bogart April 20, , am. You have neglected the best inexpensive toy of all: the giant cardboard box! Or a modest collection of medium-sized cardboard boxes.

We got months of use play out of the box-the-dishwasher-was-delivered in. A bathtub full of water and some bath toys which might be 2 plastic cups, an old soda bottle, and a cork and with age-appropriate supervision of course.

A lot of time is spent making things as well using various supplies. One time little MM was very quiet upstairs and when we came up he had made a book wall out of all the books in our house at the top of the stairs. It was taller than him! Every kid is different of course, but it does seem that very few toys end up being big hits with a child and the rest of the toys just sit around and create clutter.

So, yeah, this article only mentions traditional toys that were actually purchased at a store. Dancedancekj April 20, , am. I firmly believe that fostering creativity with playtime is part of what allowed my success later in life.

They did have a plethora of paper, crayons, markers, colored pencils, scissors, tape, glue, toilet paper, brown paper bags, toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, and all sorts of household items that could be used to create all sorts of different things.

I like to think this allowed me to hone my ability in drawing, sculpting, construction, design, manual dexterity, and project management :.

bogart April 21, , pm. Thanks Mrs. MM — I missed that detail in my first read-through that these are toys that were purchased, though inexpensively. Erik Y April 20, , am. Plus one on the big cardboard box.

Free to get, hours of fun, and you can put it in the recycle bin after. Add some markers, crayons, tape etc. And our kids have built fantastic box worlds. The teens usually get in on the act too, helping out the little ones. All of my crew have loved playing with them, and they will probably keep bring enjoyment for decades and generations to come.

Stavros April 20, , am. Any recommendations? I was thinking Harry Potter, but may be a bit too deep. Amy April 20, , am. Get thee to the nearest library — you should be able to find age appropriate kids books there.

I bet a librarian staffing the kids section would be a wealth of knowledge regarding titles and authors. I hope you get the reading tradition going! shanendoah the dog ate my wallet April 20, , pm. My parents read to us from a very young age. Hits were Choose Your Own Adventure books, also The Phatom Tollbooth, and a much less famous book called Key to the Treasure by Peggy Parish- it started a tradition of my aunt hiding little gifts for my brother and I every day, but we had to follow the clues to find them.

Crazyfbs April 20, , pm. The Railway Children by E. Nesbit Any Redwall book, Brian Jaques, you may want to read through them first, but they split up easily and feature poems, songs, and recipes The Boxcar Children series The Merlin series by T.

Marcia Frugal Healthy Simple April 20, , pm. Money Mustache April 20, , pm. We actually read the Harry Potter series up to book 3 only books were too much at the time to our son when he was 4.

He can sit through some pretty big books. Surprisingly, he also enjoyed Watership Down and Wildwood which were longer and had more complicated language. I really like Cornelia Funke, but MMM is not a fan of the writing style.

We read a bunch of her books. The Invention of Hugo Cabret was also a really fun read, but I remember thinking it felt a bit creepy at first. But, it turned out great. The Magic Tree House and the Boxcar Children would probably be good for a 4 year old, but they get a bit boring to read after about books, but they are pretty educational.

EDIT: I just found my list of books! The last few would probably be great for a 4 year old. The Caboose Who Got Loose was one of our favorites for a long time. T-Lou April 20, , pm. I too read all of the Harry Potter books to my kids — I think I started when my girls were about 5 and 6 and ended as they were almost teenagers, well able to read on there own.

I had forgotten about the Kenneth Oppel bat series. Kenneth Oppel rocks! After reading all three of the bat books to my girls we discovered 2 other books of his, set in the future, called Airborne and Skybreaker.

I was skeptical when my nephew reported that the Airborne books were better than the bat series, but had to agree after reading them both. As much as we all loved them — even more magical for boys than girls I expect — replete with made up dangerous creatures and pirates.

Money Mustache April 21, , am. All three of us are finding that these Kenneth Oppel books are some of the best kid books around. Better than most of the other authors, just in sheer interestingness and writing quality.

For example, we read the entire Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, and it was good enough for him to enjoy, but sometimes felt like a long forced slog through a bunch of dull adventures.

Especially when he tried to get into detailed historical plot points with a bunch of confusing greek god names instead of action. But this Oppel dude actually makes the bats into characters you care about, and the concepts and adventures they go through are just plain awesome.

Hanah April 21, , am. Second The Railway Children by E Nesbit. She has some other terrific books too: Five Children and It jumps to mind. Also the Moomintroll series by Tove Jannson.

The latter is little known outside of Europe but totally delightful for adults as well as kids. Simple, cheap, and a great workout. Count how many times your child can jump without stepping on the rope.

This traditional backyard game is loads of fun for kids. Skip Toy. Hula Hoop. An addicting challenge, once you get the hang of it.

Little ones can roll and chase them, or hop between them, across driveways or gyms. Buy a few and the game options grow.

Lawn Darts. The plastic kind with rounded tips are safest. Want to get a little kid running around? Blow some bubbles and challenge them to count how many they can pop.

See who can keep an inflated balloon up the longest using different body parts, or race across the yard, hitting the balloon as you go.
